More about The Field Village
Beautiful place and excellent service
We stayed in this place during a journey through Asia and it was a really unique experience. We stayed in a rice field view teak pavillion for one night. The room is spacious and beautifully furnished with much care given to real Thai furniture. The pavillions are located in a gorgeous garden and they offer a nice swimming pool with a direct view onto the rice fields.
The service is excellent - we were picked up and droped in the city. During our stay we enjoyed very good - but spicey - food and had some sun-downers at the pool-side bar.
The hotel owner took us around to some real handicraft markets out of town - not the usual stuff you can find at the Chaing Mai Night market.
The only thing you should be aware of is that the location is close to the Chaing Mai airport - once in a while you can see and hear airplanes starting and landing - but there is not so much air traffic to Chaing Mai Airport and it gets very slow at the evening.
With respect to the great accomodation, the excellent service and a reasonable pricing this was our top choice during our whole journey.
A wonderful oasis
The few days that we stayed at The Field Village was booked by my boyfriend.....So I didn't have any idea what the resort was like other than i was advised that "it sounds wonderful"!
So we took a flight into Bangkok then connected to Chiang Mai where we were collected by Art from The Field Village who took us to the resort.....Wow!!! It was the most wonderful place that I have stayed, but we were booked for one night, two days, the first thing I asked was could we stay for longer, I felt so relaxed and so at home here.
I will try and describe this wonderful place, beautiful elegant teak houses with the most comfortable rooms all of these houses on stilts (just 8 of them) amoungst wonderful gardens over looking paddy fields with the mountains as a back drop!!
We were able to stay longer and we had the most relaxed few days, Jong and Ron treated us better than house guests nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very welcome and very special, we will return at the very earliest opportunity but have enquired upon a Christmas break to find they are booked already; so as we are aware we need to book early - I am not surprised what a brilliant place!!!
Great excursions either half or full days, many too choose from or a days relaxation by the pool with the bar to hand and if you love good Thai food then look no further!!!!
I am looking forward to my return and can recommend this wonderful resort so much!!!!!!
Bad start, soon recovered with exceptional service
We stayed in The Field Village for four nights in September 07. We were travelling on a 2 week holiday in Thailand and were staying here in Chiang Mai to celebrate our anniversary.
We arrived at the airport and found that there was no-one from the resort there to meet us as arranged.
The taxi firm and hotel desk had not heard of Field Village as it has only been open for 5 months. We managed to get the phone number from the website and called them. A car was with us within 15 minutes to take us to the resort. But when we arrived it turned out that they did not have a record of our reservation (just the payment for the deposit). There were no rooms available of the type that we had booked.
In the end we stayed in a small room for the first night, and then moved to a bigger room (although not the deluxe 2 level cottage we had booked). Our bill was adjusted accordingly.
After our bad start, Jong did everything that she could to make our stay as enjoyable as possible - and she did a great job. She arranged a complimentary candle lit anniversary dinner for us by the pool, and then arranged for us to let off hot air balloon lanterns.
She also told the excellent guide on our elephant trekking day trip that we were on our honeymoon, and so we got first class treatment all day.
Jong also ordered take away for us one night we fancied pizza, and there was a fireworks party and BBQ on our last night as well.
The resort is lovely and relaxing, and the accomodation is nicely decorated, comfortable and clean. The pool was great and the staff all very attentive. The Field Village is under the flight path into Chiang Mai airport, but there are few flights each day, and it wasn't especially disturbing at all. Don't let that put you off.
In the end, the reason for our mislaid booking became clear, as the receptionist had recently left and the resort was short-staffed. While we stayed this meant that some of the basics - like having keys for the rooms, laundry returned on time etc, were a little late and needed chasing. Meanwhile Jong continued to deliver exceptional customer service and making some really lovely finishing touches. Jong and Ron were recruiting while we stayed, and with a full compliment of staff, I have no doubt that they will manage to make sure the basics are in place to the same high standard as the exceptional finishing touches that Jong offers.
I chanced upon The Field Village website when browsing the Net, and the fantastic reviews really attracted me. upon arriving the "hotel" / "resort", i knew it was the place I want to be; however, not so much for my husband as he also likes to stay in a typical hotel. anyway, we only have 2 nights for this trip and after the 1st evening, my husband has already started to like the place. its SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL! our 2 storey cottage was overlooking the pool towards the paddy field which we can never see in Singapore. Ron, Jong & Present are the friendliest people we met. They are so helpful & i find that they treated all their guests like friends! Thanks Jong for arranging the hot air balloons on our final night. There's actually only a few of us and she made such an effort to let us have the experience! Its really so amazing & unforgetable, and we can never have things like that if we stayed in some standard hotel. For those of you who consider whether if this is "the place" and wonder if it is too far from town, do not worry. Town is just some 20 minutes away by Tuk Tuk. Staying at The Field Village brings you to a state of tranquil, peace & romance. It helps rejuvenate your state of mind (better than yoga & aroma therapy!) We just came back yesterday and my 12 year old son, Samuel & myself are already missing the pool. We sure will be planning to return soon!
Loved this property! Very beautiful setting. Jong was amazingly helpful and fun. Nicki our tour guide could not have been better.
It is a bit out of town. Taxi's aren't really familiar with the location!
If you want to be in the heart of things this probably isn't the right property for you. If you prefer the quite and don't mind "commuting" into town you will love it here!
The dinner poolside was delicious! Enjoy.
caution-this resort has some issues.... especially for families
if noise bothers you, avoid this hotel asit is DIRECTLY under the flight path for the chiang mai airport and the planes cease for only 8 hours (11pm to 7am) each day. The resort is beautifully designed and laid out but as it is newly opened it is having some issues - no english speaking staff and the owners (british mature guy with thai bride) think they can do everything-this is their first attempt at a owning a hotel/resort. They refuse to order taxis insisting that they have the capacity to drive everyone everywhere with the limited cars and staff they have-we were always waiting for a lift somewhere or being asked to hurry so we could hitch a ride with another guest to town ( which we all were billed for -200 bht each way). Not for the independent traveller- good resort for those who want to be spoon-fed their travel as the owners are knowledgable about the local area and can arrange great private tours etc..for a price.....is a 15 minute ride to town and taxis mostly had no idea where to go to take us home - we usually had to get the taxi driver to call the owners who could explain how to get there-not much fun at night on a dirt track in the middle of nowhere with taxi drivers who speak no english....stay here if you want to have a relaxing holiday and only leave the resort once or twice throughout your stay- although the food is limited(cooked in the owners own kitchen- and we generally only got a choice of 2 dishes each meal)...and you need transport to get to anywhere else to eat. If the owners can sort this stuff out - employ english speaking staff and realise they don't have the capacity to do everything then the resort could be lovely!
By the way-The deluxe cottage 2 storey is not what we thought it would be- the upper and lower levels are not connected by internal stairs- you need to go out the front door and up the stairs to get to the 2 nd level....if you are concerned about child safety this is not really acceptable because the childrens beds are in the kitchen and you can't hear them easily.....
Field Village -Great Deal for the Price
We spent three nights at the Field Village and have mixed views on it. Those airplanes are a bit noisy. Getting back from town at night was a bit tricky as mentioned by previous reviewer. However, the price was fabulous and that accounted for a lot. The taxi fares were reasonable and while difficult to obtain a driver who knew his way, (they are learning though) it must be offset by the great price on a room at the Field. The setting is intimate and we had a chance to talk with the other guests. Jong and Ron were helpful and delightful and will get this all sorted out in time. I suggest to them to obtain more low lights along the paths to the various rooms. Our dinner on arriving our first night was good with a reasonable number of choices but perhaps not a number of courses. We were full and the price of the meal was fair as well. Back to those airplanes: we were sleeping during the no fly time and were off to town for most of the airplane traffic so it wasn't so bad. If one planned to lounge around the pool most of the day I can see where it would be annoying. In the end, it is the great price that makes this a deal, the newness...and the beds were so comfortable!
One of the greatest Hotel experiences
We spent three days at the Field Village and it was just the most amazing experience in Thailand. The resort is beautifully located in a rice field a little bit outside of Chiang Mai. It is the perfect combination of a boutique resort in a family-like atmosphere. Ron, the british owner and Joong really took great care of us. We felt very much at home and had some wonderful nights with them and the other guests at the bar next to the pool. I have traveled to a lot of places and good hotels all over Asia, but I really have to say that I have never experienced such a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The cottages were beautiful, spacious and fully equipped. The Field Village can organize all kinds of tours and trips in and around Chiang Mai. And even though there weren't any taxis around, the shuttle service from the hotel worked just fine.
We were really sad when we had to leave for Phuket after three days. You cannot expect a 5-star-luxury hotel and the Field Village doesnt claim to be one. But if you want to spend a couple of relaxing days in a beautiful surrounding with great people in Chiang Mai, then there is no better option than the Field Village. I hope I can come back soon! A real secret gem in Chiang Mai!

Perfect place to unwind after dirty Bangkok!
Grateful for airport pick-up we arrived in The Field Village. We were personally greeted by Ron and Jong, the proud owners of this beautiful place. We were told to check in when we had made ourselves comfortable and a bowl of fruit and drinks were sent over to our room which was a lovely treat. The resort is one and two storey teak houses set around a pool area and overlooking rice fields.
We got endless travel info from Ron and got social scene advice and general spoiling from Jong.
We are backpackers so the hotel is way above our current budget but it was money well spent as far as we were concerned.
Also can be viewed as an up-side is the location, its very much out in the country-side and taxis haven't a notion where they are located.
We found there was a slight over-sell on their in-house treatments and tours which is perfectly fine if you are happy to have your trip organised by someone else.
Advice: Rent moped / motorbike and enjoy the surrounding country-side and sights!
Great off-the-beaten-path experience
My sister and I stayed at the Field Village for three nights during our visit to Thailand. Our intention was to enjoy a spot out of town and use it for a base from which to take day trips to areas further afield. The Field Village set us up on one tour to see the elephants and a variety of other activities with their standard guide, Nikki. She was fabulous and extremely knowledgeable. Our other day tour was hosted by Ron, one of the resort owners. We had a wonderful time, well off the beaten path, visiting a national park with a limestone waterfall, having a great lunch on a lake, and riding in a dragon tail boat. This was not a tour you are going to find online. After that day trip we found ourselves going out downtown with Jong to listen to bands and enjoy some time out on the town.
In terms of the Field Village itself, this is not a place to stay if you want a sterlized large-hotel experience where you avoid speaking to people who do not speak English as well as you do. You also need to work with the fact that you are a little ways out of town and give reasonable notice if you are going to want to go on a tour or go into town (we set up all of our tours before we arrived). That being said, we never had a problem joining into anything or having a ride when we needed it, and the other guests did not seem to have a problem either. To the contrary, we had a mid-afternoon flight out and the Field Village accommodated our schedule so that we could enjoy the inn, have lunch, shower and change before we left.
We found the food fabulous, the prices more than reasonable, the setting beautiful and the staff extremely friendly and helpful. Jong and Ron both went out of their way to make us feel at home and part of things. I would suggest you try to talk them into letting you release the neat hot-air balloons at sunset as it was a truly unique experience.
