Travel Tips for Chiang Mai

Shopping in Chaing Mai

by Christopher03 about Night Market

The Chaing Mai night market is know as one of the best in Thailand. It has a lot more on offer than that of Kao San Road in Bangkok. The market traces down both sides of a busy street. It has alot on offer including the usual, t shirts and clothing, as well as the cheapest silver in Thailand (92.5%) It also has a range of spices, flowere, handycraft and perfumes. The latest on stock when I was there last april was counterfeit Birkenstocks, G shock and rolex watches.

On Sunday afternoon there is an aditional market place that stocks mainly handycraft. It runs from the old city gate all the way up to the bordering night market Silver and handycrafts are the cheapest to buy. You will also find a lot of village people from near by hill tribes wondering the streets selling handy crafts. There is not as many tshirts as in Kao San Rd but everything is alot cheaper Decide what your willing to pay beforehand, have some fun bartaring, but hey don't be stupid, smile, and keep friendly. You look like a fool when your arguing over what works out to be a dollar. And hey after all, your a visitor in this country, have a little respect for these hard working people.

Great place to chill with locals ...

by Tusitala about Dalaabaa

Dalaabaa is a really cool place to enjoy the best of Chiang Mai's laid back ambience, while enjoying some (ok, make that a lot!) of drinks, and a nice Thai meal.

Situated on a large block of land on the 'other' side of the river, it's a surprising oasis, beautifully landscaped with lanterns, walkways over water, etc, and then the wooden Thai-style architecture of the restaurant and verandah area itself.

Lots of red silks and mood lighting set the tone. My favourite section is the comfy bench style seating outside, where large groups of hi-so Thais make merry. Not a backpacker haunt, but of course farangs are very welcomed by the hostess, Soo.

Open 6pm - midnight daily. Simple slices of grilled beef. Delicious.

Maesa Elephant Camp

by yipsufen

Maesa Elephant is ISO9001:2000 certified under services and entertainment. It opens daily from 7am till 2:30pm. A place not to be missed while you are in Chiang Mai.

Elephant Show Time:-
8am, 9:40am & 1:30pm

Elephant Show Programme:-
Welcome guests by elephant parade
Demostration of the various ways of getting on / down elephant
Musical talent show & dancing
Demonstration on how elephant sleeps
Elephant football league (soccer show)
Elephant artist show. The only place where elephants paint abstract & realistic style (must see)
Traditional Thai massage show
Elephant competition - sticks pick up game
Dart game show by elephant
Logging show & lumber work show

Note: Elephant bathing at the two bathing areas (at both sides of the bridge) before the elephant show at the show ground. Check out those elephant keepers standing by & holding a basket. They are actually catching elephant dung floating in the river. Really an amazing sight ! You can also feed them a comb of bananas. After that, walk straight and climb up the steps to the show ground and find yourself a nice spot to enjoy some elephant stunts.

The show is in overall far more superior than the elephant show in Bangkok Safari World. Elephants here are more well-trained and talented. Moreover, it's a real elephant camp or training school set in a natural forest ground and not in enclosure / zoo. If you have watched the elephant show / ride on a elephant here, you can give them a miss in your next trip to Bangkok Safari World. Trust me!

Elephant's paintings are up for sale at THB3,000. Wow... really a masterpiece that can fetch good price. Although the paints are mixed by the keeper, the elephant's strokes are so stable & delicate. Ellie, kudos!

Don't miss the once-in-a-lifetime experience of riding on an elephant and trekking into the jungle. You will be thrilled ! Grasp the handle bar firmly, it's like a roller coaster ride. 30 minutes of elephant ride costs THB400. Your photo with elephant dung paper photo frame selling for THB300.
