Cheap central hotel with pool
Having spent the first night paying 32 US dollars for a 3 star room up the road (Central Duangtawan), this was a great find for the price. Just like a 2 star hotel you would find on a mediterranean resort, it has good sunbathing and pool area. Cheap bar and restaurant. Rooms are good size and cleaned every day and so for 650baht to 750 baht a day for double room incl breakfast, its a deal.
Unique Quality: Right on Moonmuang St, near all bars and restaurants.
Pool and sun area.
Good breakfast included.
Good tours available

Top North Guest House
A friend and I stayed at the Top North Guesthouse for 7 nights. We were directed to it by a travel agent in Bangkok.
The hotel staff picked us up from the airport, however we soon found out that the rooms we had reserved were actually occupied, and that we will have to move in to a cheaper one. I ended up liking the cheaper room just fine, whereas my friend moved into the pricier one a few days later. The main difference between the rooms was the view, which was quite nice from the third floor. Also the more expensive room was larger and had a larger bed.
We had originally only made reservations for 3 nights but had continued to stay for an entire week. The hotel staff never inquired when we were planning on moving out - so it became obvious why our the reservations were not kept when we arrived: the coordination of guests is handled very casually.
The only thing that I thought was very odd was the shower set up. The shower was in the same room as the toilet, but the room itself was only slightly larger than a closet. So during the shower absolutely everything in the bathroom got drenched.
The price of the cheaper room was THB500. And THB600 gets you on the third floor.
The hotel was conviently located within the city. The hotel organizes it's own tours around Chiang Mai and you can also rent a motorcycle (you can get a better motorcycle just down the street for the same price).
Unique Quality: The guesthouse was very pretty on the ourside, with lots of flowers and character. The staff were also very friendly.
The loudry service was also quite good.

Chiang Mai Oldest Guesthouse
We were looking for "Top North Hotel And Guesthouse" (tip VT) but our driver made a mistake and brought us at the "Top North Guesthouse".
After all a very lucky mistake.
Unique Quality: We had a very good time in this "cozy" well organised guesthouse. There is a swimmingpool, sauna and a nice restaurant. In the restaurant you can also watch movies.
The hotel is on a quiet location inside the centre.

Nice price for a relaxing stay
As soon as we arrived from the nighttrain from BKK, we took a tuk tuk here immediately. You have to push the driver to bring you here and not to another guesthouse. I slept for hours at a sun bed at the swimming pool and as I woke up I was totally rested and had a good dive in the pool. The meals in the restaurant are great and the staff is very nice. The rooms are proper against a reasonable price. We also made a reservation for a plane ticket here and the woman was very helpfull to find the best connection.
Unique Quality: This place is in the heart of Chiang Mai town. It has a nice tropical garden and comfortable rooms. Fan and air-conditioned rooms with full equipment and facilities. Nice Swimming pool & sun terrace, restaurant offering Thai, Chinese and international cuisine. Tour service (also possible to make a reservation for plane tickets), car rental. It's possible to rent a safety deposit box.

The top of the North!
You have a choice between a room with fan or a room with airconditioning. The shower has got hot water and toilet & shower are separated from eachother. The beds are okay & the room is clean.
Unique Quality: This Guesthouse has a huge pool! Don't expect a slide or something like that, just expect a large pool where you can swim as much as you want.
At the Guesthouse there also is a terrace / restaurant and you can book flights, traintickets and trips (jungletrekking, elephantriding, river rafting) here. It's very good arranged!

A good find
It says it is a guest house . Well it has a guest house feel but has all the amenities of a hotel with a pool , restaurant, internet, travel service and motorbike rental.Room rates are from 300- 500 baht not bad for being right in the heart of things

Great Backpacker Hotel in Chiang Mai City Center
This 99-room hotel in the city center of Chiang Mai is perfect for the backpacker. There are good cheap rooms 600 Baht and under. Rooms come in three categories - fan, air, and new air and the difference between them is only around 250 Baht. The hotel has a travel center and Internet center, great for arranging transportation and trips. There is also a pool to cool down in. The hotel is located by the city center, walking distance from many banks restaurants, bazaars, wats, etc...
