Travel Tips for Chiang Rai

Chinese in northern Thailand

by mim95

The KMT soldiers came from Yunnan Province in China. So they speak mainly in Yunnanese, a dialect that is very different from Mandarin. The children go to both Thai and also Chinese school as well to learn Mandarin. Many are trilingual, as they speak Yunnanese at home. Some of the wealthier ones go to continue their study in universities in Taiwan. Most households have satelite tv channels from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, with at least 10 Chinese channels. All the Chinese households have the traditional good luck writings on or around the door. The inside is quite traditional as well.

If you can speak Mandarin, it can be a very interesting trip as you can always hear stories about life in the tough days from older folks.

There's really nothing special to this tourist spot except two hot springs steaming and bubbling. You can buy a basket of chicken or quail eggs to boil them for a few minutes. There you go, cooked and ready to be eaten.

There's a myriad of stalls here selling souvenirs, knick knacks, food stuff, clothings etc. Basically they are selling similar merchandise. Don't get lost in the place and price though. However, you can bargain more for the price here and they are generally lower than the price in Chiang Mai.

Long Neck Village

"Me and Long Neck Woman"

Its only half of the coil, but heavy though. Long neck woman started their first ring at the age of 5 and stop at 27.

If they happen to marry other tribesmen, they still maintain coiling their neck, even on their daughter.
