Crossing the border into Laos/Myanmar

by ikira

Hi Vts,

I will be visit Chiangrai in march.
Thinking of crossing the border either into myanmar or Laos for 1 day tour at border. Any recommendation?

For myanmar, is mae sei, worth to spent 1 full days with overnite there?
I have no idea regarding Laos side.

Please help.

I have not been to Mai Sei, so I cannot comment on stopping there. However in my own research if you are only looking to renew your Visa, then going into Burma would be cheaper and more efficient.

You can get a day pass for US$10. When you re-enter Thailand, your Visa will be restamped. Unless you have a multiple entry Visa already, you'll only get a 15 day Visa when coming into Thailand overland.

If you go to Laos via Chiang Khong to Huay Xai, distance is also a bit farther and Lao Visa is min US$35 depending on your nationality.

About 3 hours to the border.
Vientiane is an additional 2 days travel minimum overland.
Luang Prabang is closer, but is still one full day minimum travel from the border.

probably you think Mae Sai-Tachileik border check point for Thai-Maynmar. I'd go here because it is somehow more interesting place than Lao-Thai border in Chiang Khong-Houay Xay. One day is okay, but more than that... you should go elswhere. KengTung, or Kyaing Tong in Easter Shan state is 3 hours (at least) bus ride from border and it's lovely area around. Border towns are more about trade and that kind of stuff... it's interesting if you like to watch people around their businesses :)

Other places further... like Dave said, it takes quite some time to reach but it's worth it.

for this information you should ask at Maynamar embassy. the rules are changing.

in 2006 i was for example able to get 14 day pass which allowed me to stay in myanmar for this period of time in certain areas.
but for you as asean member you may have been expempted from visa, at least they were talks about it. still, the best is to ask the embassy.
anyhow... it is popular border check point for visa run and you may as well ask at some agency who run this border trips from CM/CR.

Travel Tips for Chiang Rai

Quick eat next to the bus station

by mim95 about Chinese style breakfast

This is the first time I saw congee and deep fried dough stick (yau tiu in Cantonese) being served for breakfast in Thailand. The congee has pork and egg. Not bad, can be better with a little more ginger and green onion.

As shown in the photo, the cost is: 25 B.

Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong

This temple is located on a small hill to the northwest of the town centre, near the river. It features a golden chedi that was constructed with a mixture of Bhu-kam (ancient Burma) and Lanna style. It is around 14 meters high, the lotus-petal base, the body, the bell, the top part of the Chedi are decorated with a gold foil. According to the Yonok Chronicle, the Chedi was originally built in the year 940 A.D. during the reign of Phraya Ruen Kaew, Prince of Chiang Rai, to house the Lord Buddha's relics, but this the current chedi probably dates from the 14th century.
