Golden Triangle Tour

by yvr

Looking for a tour operator in Chiang Rai that offers one day tours to the Golden Triangle, I know there are many to choose from but would like some recommendations from those that have taken such a tour with a local agency.

In Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai you can get your tours from local travel agencies pretty easy. Find a tour one day and leave the following day. They are used to tourists with only short holiday time available. I have been on two of Golden Triangle tours purchased from different travel agencies in Chiang Mai. I used the Montri Hotel three times and got my tours from the nearby travel agencies. One place was called Nana and was near a good restaurant on Ratchadamnoen Road. The other place I can't recall.

There are lots of local travel agencies I don't really think you get cheated on what you get. The travel agency just acts as the broker for the tour. They take your money and make arrangements with the tour companies. I have taken lots of tours in Thailand and have never been screwed on getting my tour. You can find a couple of the nearest travel agencies to your hotel and decide which place you prefer, the prices will probably be about the same from place to place anyway.

Tour company picks you up at your hotel and returns you there at the end of the tour. Some expats use these tours to extend their time in Thailand because the tour company usually stops in Chiang Rai long enough for the passengers to go over to Myanmar to get get their passports stamped. You can also get a tour from your hotel tour desk. That might be the safest but they often cost a hair more than what you get in a travel agency and you end up in the same van with other tourists who got their seats through private travel agencies.

Good luck.

Whoops! Sorry, I thought it was Chiang Mai not Chiang Rai. However if you are in Chiang Mai you or someone else can use the information.

So, sorry!

Hi,

I went to Golden Triangle from Bangkok by using the hotel tour. Mostly people in Thailand is nice but the problem is not mostly people in the north side can speak English. Then you have to make sure that the tour guide can speak english and can explain the history bla bla.. . Also if you take the Golden triangle boat to Don Sao, then you have not to be worry because the boat guide can speak English.

Travel Tips for Chiang Rai

Refreshing dessert

by mim95

I've tried all kinds of Thai dessert before, they are usually extra sweet. The most refreshing is the ice grass jelly. It is very simple, made with: grass jelly, ice, and a little bit of coconut milk. Grass jelly doesn't look very appealing, as it is like jello, but is black in colour. It is very popular in many Southeast Asian countries, as well as China and Taiwan. It is made with some type of grass, and can cools you down in a hot day.

In Chiang Rai, you can find ice grass jelly at a restaurant at the NE corner of Banphaprakan Road and Itsaraphap Road, very close to the mosque. 10 B for a bowl.

For other types of dessert, you can also find in this restaurant, and another one a couple of shops east of it. How can you tell? If the Thai dessert is served, you'll see what's available at the front of the restaurant. And they are also found in the street stalls. 10 B for a bag.

Golden Triangle Buddha

by yipsufen

Once you have ride on a boat for Mekong River cruise, you will notice a giant golden buddha erected on the bank of Mekong River. This is the Golden Triangle Buddha. The buddha is like sitting on a long boat.

I didn't have enough time to explore this place but I managed to snap a few photos of the replica elephants. They are so nice with gold paint.
