wat rong khun

by stscreen

Is it easy to get tuk tuk from wat rong khun to chiang rai city?
Thank you.

I was there a fortnight ago, and you could get one easily, but be prepared to bargain hard, they are pretty ruthless. My advice would be to do what I did and hire a scooter if you are any way competent on two wheels. It will work out cheaper and you can go on to visit the nearby falls. The roads to the wat are well paved so it is not a problem. You could even cycle as a daytrip if you fancied it.

Whatever you do, go. I really have never seen anywhere like it, it is incredible.

Hope this assists,

Travel Tips for Chiang Rai

Carnivore's paradise

by Willettsworld about B.K.K. Chiang Rai Steak

This place was just up the road from where I was staying at the Janson House (see my accommodation tip). Like the sign says, it's a steak place and if you're a bit of a carnivore then you're in for a treat. The menu is packed with meat such as sausages, burgers, chicken, pork, lamb and beef. A western hippie guy told me to go for the "4-combo" which took him 1.5hrs to eat so I ordered it and it came on one of the biggest plates I've ever seen - 14" or 15" wide! He wasn't wrong. You can choose 4 meat items from a large list that comes served with fries, garlic bread and coleslaw. Great stuff and just what the doctor ordered!

the madness of Opium explained

by easterntrekker

When I heard about this Opium museum I was ho hum about seeing it....but it proved to be a very informative and worthwhile stop on our tour of the North.

The Hall of Opium combines a museum on the history of opium and the impact of illegal drugs, with an information centre for research and extension education on opium, opiates and other narcotics.

It is very well done ,with artistic exhibits that consists of a 500 foot long tunnel that allows you to experience an opium high ( music and aroma and all)

For me I gained a much better understanding of the negative impact and terrible destruction of a powerful country by the even more powerful Opium trade. There are displays of the beautiful poppies as well . They look so harmless and when used by the ancient people for the most part they were harmless. But just like so many other things that industrialized peoples abused it was with opium.

Lots lots to see ..a must if you are in the North.
