Thai visa renewal

by olivegroves

how much will it cost to go to laos and get my visa stamped again ,do you get it at the border or do you have to get one before you enter Laos? or is there a cheaper alternative to go to Burma pherhaps?.

It's faster, cheaper, and easier just to go by bus to Mae Sai and cross over into Myanmar/Burma at Tachilek. You'll get a day pass for U$5 (or maybe it's U$10) and you can turn around again back into Thailand but you'll only get 15 days when re-entering Thailand by land. No need for a Myanmar visa and far cheaper than crossing into Laos at Chiang Khong to Huay Xai since the Lao visa is usually around U$35. If memory serves, the bus takes about an hour to Mae Sai.

Definitely Burma. It's cheaper for sure!

I believe it's US$10 now to enter Burma...used to be US$5 some time ago.

Travel Tips for Chiang Rai

Street side roti

by mim95

Roti is a popular snack in Thailand. It is made of flour and cooked on the hot plate with butter. Eggs, evaporated milk, and banana can be added.

In Chiang Rai, a permanant street stall can be found near the clock tower, at the southwest corner of Banphaprakan Road and Jet Yot Road. Banana roti cost 17B. I think the plain ones cost around 10B.

King Mengrai Statue

by mim95

King Mengrai was a powerful leader of what is now Northern Thailand. He founded Chiang Rai in 1262 as the capital, and then moved the capital to Chiang Mai in 1296.

Thai people have great respect to King Mengrai and many would pray with the two palms together when passing by the statue. They also bring incense, flowers and other offerings to pray in front of the statue.
