weather in July/August

by frederikranke

Hey,

How bad is it to visit Chiang Rai weatherwise in the rainy season?

Cheers

Frederik

RE: weather in July/August

by globerover

The rainy season is always a question of being lucky or not. We were in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in August 2003 and the weather was simply great. This year in August there were heavy rainfalls in Northern Thailand. I do not know how much Chiang Rai was affected, but Chiang Mai that is not too far away faced several days of heavy rains followed by really bad floods.

Take it as it comes, nobody can predict the weather! As Chiang Rai lies in a rather flat area, floods are probably not as heavy as in Chiang Mai, where the water comes down the mountains.

Travel Tips for Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai International Airport

by whoooosh

Although it's called the Chiang Rai International Airport, flights to Chiang Rai only originate from Bangkok. And two airlines ply this route - AirAsia and OneTwoGo (i think that's the name). This was also the first airport that I'd been to where I could see from one end of the airport to the other.

boat ride!

If you have some time and money to spare, you can buy a speedboat ticket from the people over at the Golden Triangle for 320 baht and they'll bring you past a Myanmar casino and to the very edge of Laos.

DOI TUNG - SWITZERLAND OF THAILAND

We visiited the Royal Villa as part of our day tour out of Chiang Rai . It's a beautiful mountain top location and you could imagine what a haven it was for the Royal's to escape the summer heat and smog of Bangkok.

The strange thing about the griunds is it is planted with so many flowers typical of Switzerland. I thought it a shame , even though the are beautiful....I love the Asian exoctic flowers and plants found throughout Thailand. There were orchids there too . Lots of them but so many geraniums!!

A bronze statue entitled “Continuity” is the centrepiece of the landscaped gardens. It depicts a group of children supporting each other in a human pyramid formation as one of them climbs towards the sky. A tribute to The Princess's efforts to improve the lives of the people of Thailand.

The Royal Princess Mother resided here from 1987 to 1995, it served base from which Her Royal Highness supervised the reforestation of the project area and other development priorities. The Doi Tung Royal Villa thus came to symbolise her personal commitment and dedication to improving the lives and well-being of her subjects
