Thip Sukon House hotel in Mae Sai, Thailand by BorderHopper Most backpacker or budget traveller rooms are located on the Sailom Joy Rd. left of the border crossing bridge, parallel to the river. This hotel is probably the best of the lot on the same road as the old King Kobra hotel. We stayed here, in a clean room with tv & bathroom, for under $10usd a night. From the 3rd floor you have a view right into Myanmar and the Sai River.
Only a 2 minute walk to the Myanmar border crossing. Several backpacker style cafes line the same street. Nice views of the Sai river and Tachilek, Myanmar. If there is a backpacker street in Mae Sai this would be it (but don't expect a lot of backpackers because this town is still off the beaten path enough to avoid large, rowdy crowds like Khao San Road in Bangkok). Several places to choose from dot the hillsid by BorderHopper Its gritty, somewhat dirty, and the food sucks.....but the owners are down right friendly, the location is ideal, and its where the action is at if your in the "backpacker scene".
A nice view of the Sai River and only steps away from Burma. Great value for under $5 a night...bust be sure to ask for clean sheets....this ain't teh Ritz Carlton ! Reading on the balcony overlooking Burma by BorderHopper Back in 2002 we stayed at the Bamboo Inn (but I'm not quite sure if this was or still is the name). This hotel is located on the same street as the other hotels I've listed here on my page. With its location by the river its an ideal place to stay for cheap. It's less than 100 yards to the Myanmar border crossing. The owner is a 30'ish Japanese man who is married to a local woman....so this place is popular with the few Japanese backpackers that pass thru. They do offer some Japanese dishes in their small restaurant. The price is about $10 usd or less for a room w/ bathroom and double bed. There is a balcony with seating that has a view into Myanmar.

Mae Sai Guest House was the first to set up, right on the Lang River at the noerthernmost tip of Thailand on the river bordering Laos. Many imitators have sprung up along the road, but this is the A-Framed cottages right at the end of the road leading to the west from the Thai immigration check point. Family-run atmosphere, with cottages and villas on the water and set back as well. Clean comfortable, good sized shower/bathrooms with hot water, and good mostquito netting -- what more could you ask for from 200 baht for a single to 600 for 2 person double rooms. Restaurant does OK western style breakfast, but you'll have to walk into town (5-10 minutes) for lunch and dinner)
Lovely laid back riverside atmosphere, with Burma just 10 metres on the other side. Friendly family-run feeling, very casual.
