In Chiang Mai I stayed at the Porn Ping Towers. This is a superior hotel in the Chiang Mai region. We stayed here at a great discount due to group participating in the Chiang Mai Cricket Sixes. But I thing you could get a nice room in this fantastic city for around 1200 baht a night. Fast elevators. If you've been to Thailand, you'll know the difference.
Some pics of Koh Samet
"Kao San Road"
KSR, Bangkok at night. I love the vibe of this street.
Foodstalls like this can be found everywhere.
"Boat to Koh Samet"
The boats to Koh Samet transport both tourists as well as food, computers and other stuff needed on the island.
"Statue on Koh Samet"
"The porn beauty saloon"
Looked just like any beauty saloon to me....

April13th to 15th -Was the Songram water fight festival...it was crazy...so i'll need some time to work out what happened......but the sunsets were wild... as was the Reggae and Green Mango clubs, Kath, Spence can you remember???
April 16th- Dive day. Went to Mango Bay...wasn't feeling confident about dive as last time my ears got very sore. Put my life in the hands of 24 year old 'Racheal' from Grimsby. Did 'skills' in shallow water in the morning including under water emergency recovery (never done that before), then off to the reef for a thirty min dive...which then became a 50 min dive. Got on great, she was the best instructor ive had so far...saw trigger, parrot etc. fish. Also blue rays...... didn't use much of the tank. Back for pinapple and tea on boat, regret not doing second dive.
Nobody out tonight....met a few people at Venus bar, marty feldman is the barman....Mark and George fight....Kathleen argues with Mark... 'Terry Wogan'...crazy...late.
April 17th- Lazy day...went to town, lads got motor cycles (didn't have enough cash), walked back...took Spence out to dinner cause his birthday next week....lady taxi driver nearly broke her truck getting up to cliff top restaurant....had the 'chicken mussaman'....best food on the trip...puppies playing... Venus bar.
April 18th- The electricity stopping the fan at 6:40 meant that we were all up in time to pack....i'm glad to be moving away from my bathroom and water supply...I would have moved to another bungalow sooner but the guys were going away today anyway. For three nights accomadation food beers and lots of bottled water the 'check bin khap' came to 1550 Baht each. Taxi into town, then onto speed boat designed for twenty...after the 50th person got on (with backpack) we headed off to Ko Phang Ghan. You have a choice, get sun stroke on the deck or choke on the petrol fumes down below. We took the latter option and after an hour of smashing into waves, we all felt very sick....say no more. Waved Kathleen and Spence off to Ko Samui (then Bangkok ), Kathleen eager to get back to her meetings at the Gap in San Francisco, and Spence off to New Zealand. So, im on my own. Normal hassle for taxi's ....and right into the first scam....the drivers get everyone on board the open top vans then all announce that they're not going anywhere for 40 minutes cause they've heard that anoter boat is on the way. After a 20 min ride through dirt track, we come to an idylic beach (havn't found out where I am yet), and I'm desperate to just get a bungalow. It's 400B a night but I do have 'emeralds water' . The bathroom is mostly tiled, I have a hammock, its good. This is luxury compared to Koh Tao.
The beach is amazing, the best so far (sorry guys).Clear water up to your waste for a good while, then a coral reef that breaks the tide. An amazing sunset has just started.....enough., I'm hungry.
'come for Thai message and managure', the 'o.k view' bungalows, the 'porn' bungalows, the 'relex bar'
April 19th- Went to town to do this and book some tickets back to Bangkok......leaving spence in nz ...but might catch up with him later....i'm in a bugalow on a beach in the middle of nowhere...the electricity only comes on for a few hours, chicken fried rice everyday....its all germans and swiss...all naked on the beach...i'm trying to put a stop to it as i'll never finish my book at this rate.......might do diving certification course this week...
April 20th-So on Tuesday morning I got a bit bored of my idylic surroundings and left Hat Yai and all the naked Germans/Swiss and went in search for new bungalows at the south of koh phanghan. Arriving at the only town where the pier is, I talked to my freind "mr kim", in passing I said I'd almost like to get to Sydney before Friday....he wouldn't have enough time to get me a speed boat to Samui, book a flight to Bangkok, and get my Bangkok -Sydney flight changed for tonights flight, the only speed boat was leaving in 10 minutes...I went to get some water and enquire about bungalows.
Strolling back into mr kims shop I was was greated with..."Mr Gerry, Mr Gerry you go now...boat leaving"...a local was running with my bag down the pier and I could see a whole bunch of locals screaming and waving at ME. "Am I going to Samui" I asked...."no Mr Gerry, you going to Australia now".
I made it to the plane in Bangkok with minutes to spare....the 747 plane again
was empty...so I layed flat across my four seats and slept for 10 hours, awoken by the Greek air hosty to sit up as we landed in Melbourne. An hour later and a shave I was in Sydney....I hadn't told anyone I was coming....eek.

Re: Where do you suggest else?
strongly recommend you spending a few days on Pulau Langkawi (a Malaysian island), it's so beautiful. You can fly there from KL by Air Asia at very good prices.

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th class when traveling by rail or bus?
I'm going to be traveling around South-East Asia for several months. I've already started looking at different fares for rail and bus (coach) travel. However, I'm curious about the different classes. The 5th class is significantly cheaper than any of the others. What is a 5th class train ride like between Bangkok and Chiang Mai for example? I am not concerned about the heat (I grew up in Florida :P), speed of the train (I like long / slow trips), or crowdedness (I've lived in big American cities the past 2 years). My only concern is whether or not a suitcase and backpack that I'll have should be safe? Or any other experiences or advice would be helpful. I lived in the outer islands of the Fiji Islands for 6 months (2001-02), and I always used the public transportation buses that the locals used.
Also, if you can answer about taking 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th class transit in other countries in SEA that would be helpful too. This is my first time traveling to Asia.
Re: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th class when traveling by rail or bus?
Shaun travel in Thailand is very cheap and easy. We have taken the 2nd class train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and it was very comfortable, safe and spotlessly clean. I would recomend paying the extra for a lower berth as these are much bigger than the top I was able to sleep with my pack on the lower bunk. We have also used the buses which are also very cheap we have used all from VIP down to 3rd class. We have never had any problems. We just rock up to the bus station and catch the next available bus to wherever we are going. Taking VIP or 1st class buses include refreshments and a stop for lunch, not to mention the movies although the last lot of movies we watched in between we got to preview some Asian porn!!! My husband and I love to travel in Thailand we recently bused from Phuket to Bangkok. You will find mostly locals using the transport and very little English is spoken even by the staff on the bus, just follow the crowds as we do. Enjoy
