vitoon guesthouse: sleeping next door to the ruins

The rooms are lovely and ultry-clean and the owners very charming - plus the vitton is right outside the historical park: so you can wake up in the morning, open your eyes, and fill your sense with the sight of the ruins

250 baht (fan) and 500 baht (air con).
They also rent bikes for 20 baht a day, and sometimes they just give them to you for free

The Garden: Good budget choice in New Sukothai

We arrived without booking and were offered 350baht with air con or 250 without. The same room but with or without air con turned on.

Rooms are in fact more like stilted huts but all clean and ensuite. A little compact but great value for money and in a garden setting. Watch for the mossies though!!

Location is right opposite the bus stop to take you to Old Sukothai.

Good travel info for onward travel.

Motorbikes for rent.

Close to Poo bar which has 60 baht cocktails. Thats got to be a reason to stay in itself!!

Baan Pa Pong (Aunt Pong's house): Staying with the family

Srisatchanalai has a few places to stay. One was featured on Thai travel guide was only Wangyom Resort. BUT I've found another one more local it's not that super cheap but still considered budget (500 Baht/night for 2 persons)

House is located 5 minutes walk from "Wat Phra Si Ratanan Mahatat" (Main biggest stupa you'll see when you cross the hanging bridge)

The house lived 2 friendly ladies. One calls herself "Auntie Pong" is the owner who's running this guesthouse living with her mother "Khun Yai" (Granny) both are very friendly.

Thai style kitchen, Compact living room wih TV, aircon, balcony for those who smoke, location is great so you just stay nearby Historical Park (10-15 minutes by biking) without having to travel from downtown of Sukhothai and back in one day.

It's family run business, very warm welcoming.

Sidenote : rent the bike before you cross the bridge is good idea too, there's one in "sala" and another one owned by old lady on the opposite side of road. Support local small business!

Garden House: Wooden bungalows in New Sukhothai

This place is located just off the main road that goes to the Sukhothai Historical Park in New Sukhothai and is one of a few similar places near the river. It's a very popular place with wooden bungalows as well as conventional rooms. I had a bungalow for 350 baht which was rather small but good fun with a table, a/c, fan and an electric hot water shower in the small bathroom that was located behind the bedroom. The sink in the bathroom was a flower pot! The place has a good family feel with the woman speaking good English. They also do some good food here as well plus they have the internet.

J&J Guesthouse: At a new site

J&J Guesthouse was on our short list from the Lonely Planet Guide. When our taxi driver took us there, we thought he had brought us to the wrong place. It turned out that the guesthouse had moved to a new location half a year previously. As Jim, the Belgian proprietor, said: “We were kicked out of the previous location.”

In our opinion the new location is better than the previous one, a very short walk from Phraruang Bridge and the night stalls and resto's on Charonwithitong (main) street. And J&J was by far the best of the three places we checked out. The only regret: the old place had a swimming pool. the new one has not (yet?). But the bungalows were new, breakfast was excellent, the service friendly and the advice for trips valuable.

We stayed here three nights during low, i.e. rainy season. Water level in Mae Nam Yom river was precariously high, but a low wall protects the guesthouse from flooding. Not the road and the playground of a neighbouring school, though; walking to the main street we did not keep our feet dry.

The low-season rate we paid was THB 600 including breakfast (October 2010).
