Try Sri Satchanalai National Park
by atri
I believe it is "off the beaten path", although I have check pages of other VTers because I think that most of people visit more popular places as Ayuthai or Sukhothai.
this place, although very close to Sukhotai (50 km north of Sukhothai), might be left from the busy usual tourists schedule and therefore nice to visit. there is small section about it in Lonely Planet about Thailand within Sukhotai chapter.
to my surprise - one can rent very cheap a tent, bicycles and even sleeping bag there to sleep in the premises of the National park itself. otherwise there are enough simple bungalows - sorry I didn't check thier rent charge, but I guess it shouldn't be more than in Bangkok or some islands, which are very cheap for westerners anyway.
Bus station
by Willettsworld
The main bus station in New Sukhothai is located way out in the middle of the nowhere in the north of the town. I took a bus to Kamphaeng Phet from here which only took about an hour and cost 57 baht, nice a/c bus as well. It's also possible to go to many other destinations from here such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phitsanulok, Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen, Phrae and Lampang.
Historical Park part II
by Mahieu
The park is situated in Old Sukhothai, about 12 km from the new part of town. Tuktuks are willing to drive you to the site for 100 Baht.
Inside the park, you can hire a bicycle to explore the park or you can take a ride along the ruins with a tramway. Of course, another option is exploring on foot.
It's better to go in the early morning, this way you benefit from an excellent sunlight for pictures.
Buddha statues
by dabuwan
There are staues of Buddha almost everywhere. In most cases they represent seated Buddha and some statues are quite big (more than 10 mt).
The statues around Wat Mahathat are between the oldest, as they are original and date back to the 13th century.
