Bus departing Sukhothai to Chiang Mai?

by mell2008

Hi - We are travelling to sukhothai in March 2008 and would like to go to ChaingMai after. Would anyone know are there buses leaving Sukhothai daily to chaing mai? How long? How much? do we need to book? Thank you

The bus does not originate in Sukkothai but passes through so booking will probably be a good idea

Since trains don't run to Sukhothai the bus is the answer. We travelled in the other direction, from Chaing Mai on a 2nd class bus , It was great ,air condtioning and very comfortable, only 200 bht . I highly recommend it. It is 5 hours from Chaing Mai.
No need to make reservations ...there are tons of buses.

Below is a link to a useful map so that you can get your bearings before you get there. You can pick up maps when you hire bicycles from just outside the park entrance, which will be useful when you're touring around.

Dont Miss Out on the Gems Off The Beaten Path

by ishi01

I would like to suggest, if you can spare the time, to go check out Kamphaeng Phet which is also home to a UNESCO world heritage site and Si Satchanalai-chaliang historical park. Both are quieter and less visted by tourist but are gems nevertheless. Unfortunately, Kaphaeng Phet is situated about 1.5 hours drive from Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai is about 1 hour drive.

In all Sukhothai and the surrounding sites deserve at least 2 days; and even that is pushing it but having travelled so far to Sukhothai and missing these two would simply be a shame.

Bussing out of Sukhothai

by thedouglas

My husband was really on the ropes during our last holiday - for his transport promises! We took the bus from Sukhothai to Phitsanulok - promise for a first class bus - which one is it? Not sure - see pics. There is a vast difference between the bus standards, which doesn't usually matter a lot. I was actually more amused by the jackhammer deal going on at the counter. Very little (or no meaningful) Thai - jackhammer thumping - we didn't even know where to wait - let alone what our transport looked like!

Wat Si Sawai

by dabuwan

Wat si Sawai is one of the oldest temples in old Sukhothai, dating back to the 12th century. It is not far from Wat Mahathat and, as with many buildings from the Khmer period, it was originally a hindoo temple.
The style is very typical (reminding Angkor Wat in Cambodia) with 3 picturesque stupas and two rows of columns in front.

Wat Chana Songkhram

by Willettsworld

Wat Chana Songkhram was formerly known as Wat Ratchaburana. Its imposing building is the main chedi which is a bell shape of vast size. In the east there are a vihara, the ordination hall and subordinate chedis surrounding the main one. Topped by a structure in the shape of receding stories (vimanas), one of these subordinate chedis on the eastern flank of the main chedi is worth mentioning because of its striking feature, which conclude that it may have been built during the later Ayutthaya period.

A: "No idea of timings but there is a bus service between the two cities. Once there ask for directions to the bus station, or ask your hotel to check for you."
