Travel Tips for Sukhothai

Meaning of Loy Krathong

by Mahieu

"Loy" means "to float" and "Krathong" means a lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves. The Krathong usually contains a candle, three incense sticks and some flowers. In the past, people believed that they should ask forgiveness to the Goddess of Water because they polluted Her. Thus, in order to thank the river for its kindness, by moonlight, people light the candles and incense sticks, make a wish and launch their Krathong on canals, rivers or even small ponds. It is believed that the Krathongs can carry away sins and bad luck.

Pra Ruang Dam

by gib157

Pra Ruang Dam is an earthen dam further south of Wat Pra Bat Noi - "The water from this dam once kept the ponds and moats of the city full the entire year. It must also have been used for agricultural purposes"

It's nothing especially great but I liked it. It reminded me of the landscapes I am familiar with in Scotland - only a lot more green!

Wat Mahathat

by thedouglas

This temple is the largest, and at the centre of Muang Sukhothai - making it a perfect starting point - you can radiate to the various walls and temples from here. It is surrounded by 200metre walls and moats - and there are plenty of Buddha images to enjoy. The main feature is Phra Chedi Mahathat, which is a large stupa enshrining the Buddha's relics. There are plenty of preserved or renovated motifs in the Sukhothai style - a good place to start after visiting the museum.

There is also usually a density of peddlers here - who, like us, move around on motorcycle, selling their wares.

Wat Chang Lom

by call_me_rhia

Wat Chang Lom is not inside the archaeological park, but it's located to the north of Chotwithithong Road. It's really worth a detour: the chedi is beautiful and unusual: it's shaped like a bell like other chedis,, but what makes it different and incredibly charming it's its base: a 3-tiered platform decorated with a row of white elephant faces. Not only it's very graceful: it's very isolated, too - and you can admire it in absolute solitude.

Market in New Sukhothai

by Mahieu

New Sukhothai looks like a small village. The main event is the daily fruit and vegetable market. We were about the only tourists to stroll along the delicious food.
Except from the market, there are lots of inhabitants that own a small shop where you can buy something to eat or drink.
