Similana Resort: Similana Resort
We stayed for 3 nights at this beautiful resort which sits on a small hill on a very quiet beach north of Khao Lak.
There are 3 different types of accommodation and we stayed in a Deluxe Chalet.
The room was lovely with lots of windows which could all be opened to listen to the waves crashing on the beach.
The balcony is quite big and we had lovely views down through the trees to the beach.
About a 15 minute walk north along the beach are a few restaurants, however these were all closed as it was low season. So if you do not have your own car you will definitely need to use the hotel transport or taxis to go into town. The hotel also has many many steps, so it would be difficult getting around with very young ones, disabled or elderly.
We loved the style and location of Similana Resort, sitting on our balcony at night watching fire flies flitting around and squirrels running up and down the trees, it was perfect.
Then on our last night we had an all round view from our room of a fantastic electrical storm coming in from the ocean.
It was extremely quiet while we were there (which suited us) most times we had the beautiful pool to ourselves, the pool bar was closed but that was not a problem as we travel with a fully stocked esky!!
We would definitely stay at Similana Resort again.

Amsterdam Resort: Khao Lak worst place to stay
When we were looking for a place to stay in Khao Lak we looked at virtual tourist and found some information about the Amsterdam Resort. The reviews were not bad and we are Dutch people so we thought it was nice for a time to stay with a Dutch man. We called him and booked a bungalow, the most expansive one..1000 baht per night. We drove to Khao Lak and the minibus stopped at the "Resort"(I don't understand why he uses the name resort???). Kees is the owner and he was a little weird..but the information he had was good, he knew everything. He brought us to the bungalow which was not what we expected...not at all!..He opened the door and there was a strange smell, like very old and muffy (like the place wasn't cleaned for years), the bed was in a bad condition and didn't looked very clean also..the seats on the small patio were spotted with strange spots..like plastic stairs do when they are very old....The shower was rusty and they tried to cover it a bit by putting some plastic flowers around it...during the nighttime we had troubles breathing and we had to get out at 5.30 am because we couldn't handle it anymore..
The next day we left as soon as possible to Phuket which was much better (also the beach)
No i wouldn't suggest staying there.
Kees know's a lot about Khao Lak and surroundings and helped us out very well.

Meridian Khao Lak: Quiet amongst the trees...
Would recommend this hotel to someone that needs space, peace or a quite beach villa hideaway.
The large pools give a great deal of space to the resort. The sunsets are great here, especially with a cocktail at the beach bar during happy hour.

Phu Khao Lak resort: Great place in Khao Lak
One of the best places that I found in Khao Lak was called Phu Khao Lak, which I have written about before here. It is family run, very clean, modern bungalows, very comfortable. It is set on grounds that are post card perfect set in a coconut grove. It is not located on the beach however but we did not find that inconvenient. It has a nice swimming pool and the restuarant is run by the mother and daughter. People come from other hotels to eat here, excellent Thai food!! and reasonably priced. Because of Phu Khao Lak and the family, it was one of the best trips that my wife and I ever had to Thailand, and we've been there many many times. while we were there we did look at other places, only for future reference. We are not even considering another place. Some also may see this as a negative, but there were no TV and radio in the bungalows, we liked the idea even though I like to keep up on asian and world news. It was just plain relaxing. If I were to criticize anything, I would say that I wouldv'e liked a hammock while relaxing and taking in the scenery of the coconut grove and grounds.
Relaxed atmosphere, great restuarant and food, all home cooked. Friendly staff and owner. Bungalows set in off the road for privacy and QUIET!

Briza Beach: Nice hotel with some issues to consider
have stayed in this hotel during March 5-March 14 and overall found this a good place to stay.
Location: South Khao Lak beach, a 5 minute taxi (songthaew) ride to main Khao Lak centre. This is a set price for 150 Baht one way. Which is a good deal. In the direct vicinity of the Briza Resort are about 6-8 restaurants. Actually, on the beach, about 1-2 minute walk, you can find the best and most cosy ones. Have a nice lunch/dinner with a romantic sea view at Soul Fusion (not large menu, but great food!) or try Khao Lak 07, really friendly people and good food (and cheap!). Also there is a supermarket close to Briza, about 1 min walk, but they overcharge. Still, cheap to buy e.g. water and so on.
Beach: The beach is really nice, with to the right a jungle scenery and to the left you can take a long walk and enjoy a beautiful beach with some rocks and nice scenery.
Hotel: The hotel is very new, it open in January 2008. The lobby, rooms, etc, all is clean. The rooms are not spectacular and large, but have all necessary things you need.
Now the items to be questioned:
Beach: There are no chairs on the beach. Only option is to lay on your towel in the sand. Some people like that, some don't. We like to lay on the beach on a chair, so this was a let down for us. About 3 minutes walk from Briza, you can hire beach chairs, but there are only a few and not that clean.
Swimming Pool: The swimming pool is small (like the whole Briza resort) and there are not sufficient chairs to lay on the pool. This is a very big minus, as the German style practice of putting your towel on the chair early mornings is needed. I had to wake up every morning before 7am in order to at least get a space. I have to admit that the 2nd part of our stay, less people were at the hotel, so you didn't have to wake up early. But it is a bit letdown to try and have a relaxing holiday and either sleep in and not having a chair or wake up ridiculously early and assure a chair. This complaint also has been made by other guests I have spoken with.
Restaurant: As barely anyone eats there during lunch/dinner, the breakfast is visited well though. The selection is not huge and not that much "Western" items, but during the 10 nights, we did not get bored. However, other guests complained that breakfast was not that extensive.
Rooms: The rooms indeed are new, but you can see that everything has been built up quite rapidly and not much attention has been paid to details. E.g. the outside doors are not that well with opening and closing. Only cold water comes out of the shower most of the time.
Staff: Though most of the staff is very friendly, some girls at the reception clearly have an attitude. Also English language is not spoken that well. The most annoying thing was that there is a little cafe at the swimming pool where 1-3 trainees are hanging around most of the sunshine hours. And they are in charge of the music. Which goes from soft to loud, from Eric Clapton to....and this was very popular, Linkin Park. No offense to Linkin Park, actually good music, but for sure NOT the music you want to listen to loudly when laying at the pool on a relaxing holidays. It helps to ask them to change the music, but only for a few hours.
Conclusion: Taking into account the above, compared with the wonderful beach, the cosy atmosphere around Briza, being in a new hotel, where everything is clean and new and that for a price of 1800 Baht a night, this is very recommendable.

Ramada Khao Lak: Bang Niang Beach
Great stay at this hotel. It has just opened in december 2006, so some of it wasn't finished. But the service was very good. The people at the hotel were very helpful. The rooms were nice with a view of the beach. The location was perfect. The beach was beautiful and the area was quiet. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone who really wants a 'vacation'. Maybe not for teenagers who want a little more to do.
