bitter sweet experience
i would sum up my experience as bitter sweet. the pros for this hotel are the location which is ner to the activities area yet sufficiently far away so that you are not facing teeming crowds around yur place of stay.
the rooms are fairly clean but the srvice definitely needs improvement. for one the hot water facilitiy on tap was just a trickle. the service came and fiddled around and declared that the problem was solved. of course it did not work. we had to showere with cold water.
the breakfast at this place for the price you pay is ridiculous. it is cold, there is no station where you can order egss done to your request. it is take it or leave it. the choice is severly limited.imagine there being no cereals which is the basic component of any decent breakfast.
the breakfast starts at 0630 and if you have to leave earlier to catch your flight it just your bad luck. there is no flexibility of the timing.
i have travellled world wide. many hotels give guest take away packages in the above circumstances but not this place. again take it or leave it attitude.
i had slected this property for its location. there were many cheaper options which i should have taken. but you learn from mistakes.
Unique Quality: the only outstanding feature of this place is its reasonable location.

Grand Plaza Hotel
This hotel is typical of many mid-range hotels I have stayed at in Thailand.
The reality is never quite as good as the descriptions in brochures and web sites. Smokers have got a lot to answer for as the rooms are generally in a bad state because of them. I hate that smell of stale smoke and the cigarette burns on furniture, carpets and sheets.
Anyway, this particular hotel wasn't too bad and is in a good, central location. I booked through a travel agent just around the corner (Konsortium) who were able to give me a better rate than had I just walked in. I paid 650 baht a night.
Some hotels never seem to have enough hot water or the hot water is only tepid. Not so this one. You have to be careful not to scald yourself as it is so hot.
Update Nov. 2003 - the Grand Plaza appears to have had a bit of a makeover. New carpets in the corridors and rooms, new curtains, upholstery and bedspreads. There is still mould on the bathroom ceiling but generally the rooms look a lot better!! The room rate has not changed since my last visit.
Unique Quality: Good location and not too expensive. Fairly quiet.
