Hatyai 4D3N

by elaine8

Family of six will be in HY for a few days.
Suggestions for places to eat and shop?
Especially good thai food and chinese food.
Shopping, from markets to complexes, all suggestions welcome.
Will be staying at Novotel so places within walking distance will be most helpful.
Also apsrt from eating and shopping, is Songkhla worth a visit?
My daughter(?) wants to watch one of those "lady boy" shows.
Any suggestion? Preferably not X-rated ones.

Hi there,
I've been in Hatyai some about 2 1/2 weeks ago. It really is not a place for tourists as all. One hotel which was very cheap though is called Hatyai Rama Hotel and we found it excellent, roomy and about 10 mins. walk to the railway station, Robinsons Mall is a good shopping area and has night markets too ... not sure if every night.
Local markets operate in the evenings near the Bus Station and good bargains and food stalls there.
Be aware that nearly ALL drivers are shocking!! Talk while driving extremely fast and talk on their mobile phones or make calls, text, etc. Good Luck

Travel Tips for Hat Yai

Morning Exercise

by chiabh

In our usual morning walk thru the city, we came across this aerobic session in the open spaces in front of the Robinson Department Store in the vicinity of the Hatyai raiway station... The music was lively as the the people exercise in rhythm with the music and the leader who is on a raised platform...

Nearby, there are some elderly ladies doing slow motion tai chi exercise...

Tourist Police

by phil_uk_net

Like other places in Thailand that get a lot of foreign visitors there is a special division of Tourist Police assigned with the responsibility for looking after them. I haven't had cause to call on the local Old Bill so don't know how effective they actually are but they are certainly friendly enough.

Snake blood cocktails and snake meat soup

by phil_uk_net

For reasons of taste (in both senses of the word) I did not put this tip in the restaurant section!

I had seen this spectacle on TV a few times but had not witnessed the real thing.
There is a place on Ngu (Snake) Street that has cages full of live snakes ready for human consumption. I have not got a strong enough stomach for anything like this so just went along for a viewing.

There are about 5 cages full of snakes. There are cobras and also black snakes with yellow bands.

For a thousand Baht or less they will slit a live snake along its belly and drain the blood into a cup for you to drink. It is mixed with honey and whisky to make it more palatable. The gall bladder is also eaten. A large cobra costs 1000 Baht, a small one 500 Baht and the black and yellow snakes can be had for the bargain price of 300 Baht.

The meat from the dead snakes is made into soup and sold for 150 Baht a bowl. The skins are made into belts and wallets, etc.

The photo is not great. I would liked to have got in close and used a flash but for some reason the shop owner wasn't keen.

Shopping District

by chiabh about Shopping District

The main shopping area is in and around the Niphat Uthit 1, 2 and 3 Roads area... Shopping opportunities range from fresh produce to electrical appliances, with consumer products very readily available... Attractions include Lido Shopping Centre, Odean Shopping Mall, Hatyai Plaza and Central Department Store...

There are department complexes as well as night markets where there are numerous stalls selling clothings (T-shirts, jeans etc)... as well as a wide range of leather goods...
