This expat forum might be able to steer you in the right direction.

Perhaps a local Hat Yai travel agency can recommend a place. Across the street from the Kings Hotel is a good travel agency I have used several times in the past.

Some guest houses and small hotels rent bikes but I don't know if they would let you leave town with one! Be aware that motorcycles kill a lot of tourists in Thailand!

Good luck.

Travel Tips for Hat Yai

Visiting in Peak Season

by PS_Lee81

If you were to travel to Hat Yai in the peak season, make sure you booooookkkkkk the accommodation before you go. Always check for the availability and the price for the peak season. Or make sure you book a first night stay in case all those hotels are fully booked. I went in the peak season and the price also went high. My first night was only 580 Baht, but the second was 750 Baht!! No choice and i still need to rent, since other available was much more expensive or the rest is not suitable (not clean) for me.

The worse come to the bus ticket when there were really no more bus seat leaving Hat Yai at the date you wanted. I bought the ticket to Hat Yai for RM50 (about 500 Baht) from Pudu (KL, Malaysia) and 350 Baht for the return. And the ticket for the next day (considered peak day), they will charge for about 500 - 700 Baht again for the bus to Pudu (KL). The normal rate will be around RM35 or 350 Baht between Pudu - Hat Yai. So plan your journey wisely....

Christmas

by phil_uk_net

Christmas is quite amusing in Asia. Most of the population is non-Christian so it isn't a significant holiday. They like the paraphernalia of Christmas though, Christmas trees and especially coloured fairy lights.

In Thailand it gives them a chance to switch on the orange flashing lights on the sides of their cars and motorcycles that up to now they have found no practical use for. "Yes, I know that you look ridiculous wearing it and I know that in a predominantly Buddhist society Christmas has no religious meaning whatsoever but I'm the boss, it's the 20th of December and you WILL wear a stupid Santa hat"!

PSU Agricultural Fair

by travelpug

I visited Prince of Songkla University for its annual Agricultural Fair in August 2007. PSU is located on Karnchanawanich Road (Highway 4) accross from Tesco Lotus. It is normal held in August. It starts from mornig to late at night. To avoid the tropical heat, it's better to visit there in the evening.

There are so many things to see and shop! It ranges from plants, pets, to clothes, specialty food from nearby provinces, and even cars!!!! There are a few students organizations setting up temporarily open air bar for fund raising.

Fake Watches

by phil_uk_net about Street stalls

Fake clothes, shoes, luggage, sunglasses, CDs, DVDs, software and of course watches. Is nothing real in Thailand? Even some of the 'women' are not quite what they seem.

As a first-time visitor to Thailand in 1987 I was taken in by all of this, as are most first-time visitors. I bought a fake Rolex watch which looked OK and had a self-winding mechanism. It kept fairly good time for a while but then started to go very wrong before giving up the ghost all together a few months later. Of course, it was not waterproof either so useless on the beach or when diving. As is always the case in life, you pays your money and you takes your choice.

Buying ticket for your onward travel from Hat Yai

by traveljerk

If you are entering Hat Yai for a stop over for an onward travel, the bus driver will usually drop you at a travel agency before proceeding to the bus terminal. It is important to note that there are no bus tickets sold at the bus terminal. The bus terminal generally caters to the parking of buses only. All bus and minibus or van tickets are sold in the travel agencies which abound in the city. Then the bus comes around to fetch you at the office of the travel agency at designated time of departure. You should be around at least 15 minutes before departure time. Some minivans do not leave unless they are full especially for long distance travels to the north like Bangkok. The travel agencies are organized so that their clients can board together in one trip. A bus scheduled to leave at a certain time have to go around the travel agencies to pick up customers leaving at the same time.
