There is a Robinson store not far from the train station. Give them a look.

Travel Tips for Hat Yai

No Stress

by phil_uk_net

There is a different concept of time in Asia, as compared to Western Europe and North America. The people here tend to work long hours, typically starting at 8am and finishing their day 12 or more hours later. Some may get one day off a week, others work every day. However, I have observed that although they may be at their place of work they only actually work when there is demand. When there is not they talk, relax or even sleep. The Western culture of intense work all day, or at least to be seen to be working intensely all day, has fortunately not reached this part of the world, in general.

Bullfighting in Thailand ?

by sourbugger

Apparantly Hat Yai is one of the main centre for Bullfighting in Thailand.

Many local people seem to have no problem with a variety of 'sports' that enable humans to use dumb defenceless animals for the questionable pleasure of being able to lay a bet or two. If you read on you will see it is very different to the 'sterotype' we have in our minds gained from any exposure to Spanish Bullfighting.

For once I'll take the moral high ground and refuse to give any more information about where it happens as a form of protest. It is however as well to be informed about the background, and one has to realise that for many (however much we don't like it) it is part of the local culture and tradition. Then again we used to burn witches and keep people in salvery.

Bullfighting is one of the local sports popular among both Thai Buddhists and Thai Muslims in the South, along with cock-fighting and Siamese fighting fish.
Two bulls are matched in the ring. Betting by the audience makes the fight even more exciting for them. The fighting pair use their horns, hurling themselves together until one makes a false step.

Philatelic Museum

by phil_uk_net

If you've already seen everything there is to see in Hat Yai and are really stuck for something to do you could visit the philatelic museum and look at lots of stamps.

Alternatively you could find some fresh paint and watch it dry or a patch of grass and watch it grow.

The museum is located above the Post Office on Thanon Rattakarn, fairly close to the train station.

Central Department Store

by phil_uk_net about Central Department Store

Central Department Store is like any other department store in the world. The first thing you see (and smell) as you enter is the cosmetics counter - why is this always the case? The girls working in this section are pretty - in a 'girl working in a department store cosmetics department' kind of way. The rest of the store has items you would normally expect to find in a department store.

Intracity Taxi - Tuk-tuk

by PS_Lee81

seems like many people already wrote about tuk-tuk....
i just wanna make some conclusion about tuk-tuk. I noticed that tuk-tuk is a mean of transportation within the city center. They seldom go out of city unless you ask them to fetch you there. Once i was trying to get a tuk-tuk from somewhere out of city center, and believe me, it was hard to find one.
See also about another type of transportation at my 'Outer City Travel - Pickup Truck' tip.
