?Friends safe Ko Lanta/Klong Nin Beach, after tsunami?

by kayhollingshead

I would be really grateful if someone could help me with information about friends I am so worried about who live on Klong Nin Beach, Ko Lanta Yai, following the tsunami. I am especially worried about Wan, a young Thai woman, who runs the bar at Sunset Bungalows, and her friend Daniel, who is blind, and from Germany. Also Otto and Trang and their daughter at Otto Bar, and Charlie, Mama, and their famiy, also on Klong Nin. Thank you so much for any help...

Don't worry. everybody is fine. Otto has opened his bar again. no severe damage. it was cleaned up in 3 days. Waan and daniel are fine as well. i saw them last week on a motorbike. Lanta was really lucky. The infrastructure is fully intact, no death, no danger, no diseases. The shops are full of supplies and the situation on Lanta is very secure. Dive shops are open, underwater conditions miraculously better than ever, beaches are clean and really nobody has to miss any comfort during his or her stay. please tell everybody to come by. what lanta and krabi needs is customers.

Travel Tips for Ko Lanta

muslim culture

by willy_wonka

95% of ko lanta's population are muslim, so please keep that in mind. on the beaches it is fine, they are used to tourists, and most places serve alcohol anyway. ko lanta is quite lax on alcohol, unlike another muslim island i visited in phang nga bay.

you'll see on lanta those that work in the tourist industry, not wearing the headscarf. in small towns and villages, it is more predominant. i think its not strict, and they pretty much have the choice of if they want to wear it or not.

signage is still in thai language, although sometimes you will find arabic writing on some buildings. every tuktuk or taxi i drove in had some sort of arabic muslim token. it's an interesting mix of cultures!

massages...

by willy_wonka

all along the beach, there are little huts with mats and pillows, where people sit and wait to do thai massages. for around 250 baht or thereabouts, you can get a 1 hour thai massage, which i've heard, can be quite brutal! they also do oil massages and hair braiding as well.

thai massage is where they stretch and flex your muscles, using an ancient form of the massage which has been passed down through hundreds of years. it is the traditional thai way of doing the massage. i think i'll just stick to a nice swedish massage thanks! here in the pic, you can see kay getting twisted and pummelled and pulled and kneaded. ouch!

Our trip started on the 291205. We [Jennifer, Kaynisa, Sharen & I] met at KL Sentral @ 9am to take the KLIA Express. It was my first time on the train and it was fast. We made our way to the Air Asia check-in counter and got our boarding pass. We then made a breakfast stop at McD. Shortly, we went thru Immigration and waited at the gate. The flight AK 872 was a lil late but nonetheless, we had front seats and was just an hour away for our island vacation !

Arrived Phuket International Airport. We had yet to make accomodation booking for the nite as we had plan to take the boat out to Ko Lanta the next morning. We made a accomodation booking from the airport. Was a mistake. We found out when we got to the hotel that we had paid more for the room. Lesson leart, dont book and pay at the airport accomodation counter.

Taxi ride from the airport takes about 40 minutes to Patong beach and the cost of the taxi is about B550. Coupon system.
We spent the rest of the day walking around Patong beach and had an early dinner at one local place. On the menu - Tom Yum ! It rained later that evening. It was too early to go back to the room and so we thought of playing pool. We had 8 rounds ! Was a fun nite...Jen had taken pool photos...

Our ferry boat ride to Ko Lanta was schedule at 8:30am on 301205 but it did not leave the dock untill 40 minutes later.
The ferry was full as the boat was going to make a stop at Ko Phi Phi first and then onto Ko Lanta. We had a 40 minute stop at Phi Phi island and what a beautiful island it is.

Really stunning scenenary with clear water and lite blue sky.
Price for one way ticket to Ko Lanta is B700

While on Phi Phi island, we were approached by many people selling accomodation on the island and there was one lady, she showed us some really nice postcards pictures of her family-run bungalow at Klong Nin beach. According the the book and the WWW, its a rocky beach area. She had told us that we can swim there and only about 5KM from Saladan. We book for one nite stay at the bungalow, we got a good price, B600 for 4 of us.

The ferry boat ride continued and when we arrived to Saladan pier @ Lanta, we got a ride on the family pick-up truck. It was easily about 20 minutes ride from the pier to the bungalow @ Klong Nin. We arrived and the first thing we saw was the beach...we were all so disappointed...it was so rocky ! We then saw the bungalow which was nice. It had mosquitoe netting on the windows to keep out those nasty insects.
We left our bags and decided to go look for another accomodation for our remainding three nites on the island.

We started walking the main road and managed to get a tuk tuk to take us to Long Beach. Kay was a afraid as she had to seat behind the driver. The tuk tuk man drove slow and we made it to Long Beach and went accomodation hunting. The first stop, was Lanta Long Beach Resort, really nice wooden air-con accomodation...going for B2000 + a nite.
We continued walking and walking along the beach and finally came to one which was called Santuary. We walked in and asked we could see any available bungalow. One lady showed us [Jen & I] the bungalow, wooden with fan togther with a no roof bathroom. The shower comes from a bamboo which is placed across the brick wall of the bathroom. We liked the place and immediately wanting to pay a deposit. We stayed on for 3 nites here. Nite time skyline...what a sight, something which is not seen back home in Kuala Lumpur. So many shinning stars !
