Ko Lanta - Best Location for trips fo Ko Rok and Kradang?

by Yosemite_44

Hello,

I will be flying to Phuket in a few days - transfering to Ko Phi Phi Don (northern end of the island) for 2 days and then moving on to Ko Lanta on our way to Krabi.

We'd like to spend 2-4 days on Ko Lanta to discover the island and make trips to nearby snorkeling places such as Ko Rok and Kradang.

So I have the following questions:

1. What's overall the nicest place on Ko Lanta - in terms of beaches and scenery? Presence of bars/nightife etc is not important. I heard it gets better the more south you go?

2. Right now we are considering either Pra Ae (better than the other northern beaches and quite close to the pier) or further down near Bamboo Bay, Waterfall Beach and the national park (nicer but far from the pier). How far would it be to travel to the pier at Saladan? Is it worth going so deep south? And what accomodation would you recommend?

3. I heard the Saladan pier is the only one from where you can go to Ko Rok and Kradang, is that correct? Or could we depart in the south of Ko Lanta as well?

4. Ko Rok and Kradang are supposed to be the nicest islands around, would you recommend them?

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
Rick

In terms of scenery, definitely the southern part facing the Andaman Sea is the best place, which can be reached easily by motorbike / tuk tuk if you are staying elsewhere. It can be very expensive to stay in some of the hotels on some of the southern beaches. Pra Ae beach is nice, as there are restaurants and shops. I wouldn't stay too far south as it's not convenient.

For Ko Rok, you can just book a tour with your hotel or any travel agents, they'll pick you up at your hotel. Not sure about Ko Kradang though. Ko Rok is very nice for snokelling.

When we went to Ko Rok the boat just collected us from the beach out the front of the resort we were staying at
South is better , more quiet and nicer ambience, but you are seperated from the main township by distance and therefore trapped into buying more from the resorts at higher prices

Hi,

The further south you go the quieter and less developed the beaches get, though nowhere on Lanta is anywher near as develped as Koh Smaui or Phuket, or even Ao Nang.

Klong Dao, the most northern beach is the most developed, pretty much lined with resorts, and beach bars and restaurants, with shops, cafe / bars and smallish restaurants lining the road.

Long Beach (Phrae Ae) is the necxt most developed but still has quite long stretches with no development. It has the best selection of shops, bars and restaurants clustered on the road.

Going south, Klong Nin has quite a lot of small scale resorts, a few beach bars and restaurants and a cluster of shops, it still retains a bit of the backpacker feel.

South of here the beaches get shorter/ smaller and tend to be crescent shaped, with tree covered slopes.

There is a small group of resorts and a few shops, bars and restaurants at the north end of Kantieng Bay, in the middle of this bay and stretching up the hill and across the road is the huge 5 star Pimilai Resport, after Pimilai the road is not paved except where it crosses little creeks and there are just a few resorts and once you pass the Same Same restaurant there ar eno more bars and restaurants. People go to these little beaches at the south end (Nui Bay, Klong Jark / Waterfall Beach, Mai Pai / Bamboo Bay) for peace, quiet and solitude.

It depends what you want, Lanta as got a wide choice.

From Mai Pai to Pimalai is around 3.5 km, its around 18 km to the south end of Long Beach and around 24 / 25 km to Saladan which is the little town on the island.
