Low season activities

by mydigitalself

Hi all,

My girlfriend and I will be in Thailand for 2 weeks at the end of July and first week of August. We are strongly considering Ko Lanta for about 8 or 9 days which has been recommended by friends but are concerned that with the low season we won't be able to do things like visit Ko Rok and the 4 islands and Pi Pi, do some hiking into the waterfalls and perhaps an elephant trek. Day trip up to Krabi proper.

Patrick at Lalaanta where we are considering staying didn't seem to imply that it would be easy to organise. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The alternative is we go somewhere else entire like Chang Mai...

It is quite dead in Ko Lanta in low season in general. Many shops and restaurants are closed. I believe Ko Rok is actually closed for the season. You really would want to avoid getting into the boat as the sea can get really rough with high waves. Activities can be quite limited. You'll likely encounter leeches when hiking in or near river or waterfall. Have you considered staying on the Gulf side instead?

Hi there and thanks for taking the time to reply.

We are actually staying for about 4 nights with a friend of mine in Hua Hin, what other places would you recommend on the gulf side - I assume the ocean is stiller there and not so affected by the green season?

As I mentioned we had also thought about going to visit the Chang Mai region as friends have been there but I'm also unsure of what's best at this time of year.

Ko Tao, Ko Phangan, Ko Samui on the gulf side should be fine.

We've been to Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui, each ending one of our 3 Thailand visits.
We find Koh Samui to be the beter of the 3.
Much more relaxed amosphere. I have to say that we didin't stay at the busy Chaweng side of the island. We've been to the northern part, staying at Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa at Bophut Beach. Nice quiet beach, few hotels/resorts there. Zazen is absolutely great. More in the higher price range, but worth the money. Here's the link to my page about Samui : http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/114fff/16186f/

Travel Tips for Ko Lanta

Bring Your Sunglass

by aniquez

Not beacuse of the sun rays or anything, its for you to use when you ride the bike. The road is still very much under construction, you need the sunglass or even better your goggles (lol) or even a mask.

And please dont wear white shirts ... it will turn red at the end of your bumpy journey !

rock pools ...

by willy_wonka

one thing about the beaches on ko lanta is that around 1pm or there abouts, the tide falls. as the tide recedes, huge clumps of rock and coral formations appear on the beach. this makes the beach not look very attractive at all, and swimming isn't really an option, unless you go far out.

but for me, i loved this. in the morning, you have your typical 'perfect beach' scene, by the afternoon, there is a different kind of beach! i spent many an hour exploring the rock pools and little caves, checking out tropical fish, crabs and other sea creatures. armed with my flip flops, i could walk along coral and rocks that are under the sea, but were now exposed. some of the bright blue fish i saw were awesome, and something i will never forget!

it's nice to have two totally different beaches in the one day!
