Koh Phangan on your own

by sean2008

Hi, Im going to Koh Phangan shortly after christmas, Im a little worried about the fact that I am going to be on my own. How safe is Koh Phanagan? I dont like the idea of going back to my Bungalow on my own so would prefer to share accomodation with a new found friend. Would you advuise sharing accomadation with someone and would you advise this as a place to visit on your own. Im just worried that I'll get a bit lonely while im there. Thanks for your help

Sean I am sure you wont get lonely as you will meet heaps of people over there. May i ask why your travelling alone? And where will you be coming from?

It might be cheaper and more fun, but not saver to share your Bungalow. Ko Phangan (and Thailand) is quite save, robbery is quite uncommon. The biggest danger (more in Bangkok than in Ko Phangan are k.o. drops in your drink or gem, timeshare etc. sales). Getting lonely depends a bit on your mentality and age, but Ko Phangan is a easy place to avoid it.

i will be heading to ko phangan and samui on my own as well this coming december, i been to samui twice and i went on my own, i dont have problem travel alone around thailand so far... it a save place and people are so nice there but that doesnt mean you have to trust everyone... just becareful when you by yourself... i just dont like the fact that, sales people always cheating on the prices...

Having lived on Koh Phangan for 4+ years I can assure you it is not an especially safe island, and this problem is compounded by the fact that there is virtually no law enforcement or help available if you do have an emergency. You definitely need to keep your head on straight while you are there. Watch your drinks, don't ride motorbikes if you are inexperienced or drunk, stay away from drugs except in the privacy of your room, keep your valuables in the safe, and never ever provoke the locals into a fight. That said, you will meet lots of great people and will have a great time!

Travel Tips for Ko Phangan

Thongsala

by YaaDong

Thongsala is the first place you get to when you arrive on Ko Phangan .It's the only main port and also the only town on Phangan, houseing most of the island's residents. It provides all kinds of necessary facilities you may need including banks, ATMs,7-11,travel agents and a post office .
We booked plane tickets back to Bangkok at one of the small travel agents. We didn't get the tickets right away and the girl told us they would bring it to where we were staying and gave us her number. We were sweating abit after a couple of days but a guy turned up with the tickets,no problem Waiting for the plane tickets.

Bring minimums

by Teledude

You don't need much so a small bag will do Beach wear, flip flops, hat, sunglasses and light hikers if you want to explore more Bring whatever you may need. Although you can get most things here, they may be out as they only carry small supplies. Also they are just different. Bring meds, sunscreen, eyedrops, whatever you use daily. Waterproof cameras, or bring sturdy waterproof/sandproof bags. Always keep your camera clean and dry especially around saltwater and sand. This isn't easy Hiking wear is great. The island has some great short hikes and you'll need something more than flip flops Towels, beach blankets, frisbees toys etc. But don't over pack. Most of the resorts have everything you will need

Haad Mae Had

by austarman

On the west coast of Koh Phangan is this beach resort of Mae Haad which is perfect for those happy with just a quiet bungalo by the beach.
There is an island just off the coast of Mae Haad named Koh Ma and in low tide you can walk there.
There are boating trips you can do from here but basically you are in a quiet little world of your own if you stay out here.
The resorts here have some excellent resturants by the beach too.

Travel to fool moon party

by Sajt

If yu don't want to stay on Ko Phangan island for the party, much cheaper, if you just travel there and back from other island. Other islands accomodation like Ko Samui are cheaper and they have special trips for Fool Moon party. I payed 250 Bat, they picked me from our bungalow and they dropped me dows near my bungalow. You have to carefull a littlebit with this thing. Read the other pictures too.

floating retaurant

by jacquitabanana about don't think it has a name

Where the boats come in you can get a free boat out to a restaurant/bar thats in the middle of the sea, Thats just floating out there. It was great. The boat to it is goes from the main pint you enter the island, haad rin i think.
Very chilled and the food was very tasty. They have a hole in the floor that they showed us which had a net in the water to catch food so if you liked some seafood you can pick one from the hole and theres your dinner.
Brilliant and very peaceful.
You can kind of see it in the picture. my thai favourite chilli and basil chicken
