Phangan vs Samui
by slyons81
Hello, I'm planning a honeymoon in july in Thailand, I really liked the Bophut area, thought the fisherman's village looked like a great spot, and the beaches look nice. I heard that the beaches are somewhat polluted and phangan is a better alternative. I don't want to be completely secluded though. Anyway, I have two questions:
1) Besides Full Moon what is the night scene in Phangan
2) In general how do these palces match up
You guys have been so helpful and I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks!!!

Should probably have added we're not really looking for a wild party scene, just interesting places with laid back atmospheres and good people.

We spent a week in Samui and loved it. We found this beach hut at the southern end of Lamai beach and had a wonderful time. The place was called White Sand Bungalow (I'll double check). They have backpacker style huts but we were in luck as one of only three big/fancy huts was available and we took it. Its a big hut, very tall ceiling, private toilet with separate shower, mini fridge, tv and its own private front porch with chairs and table. Best part is that its right on the beach, step off your porch steps and your feet are on the sand. About 10 second walk to the water! At $20 USD per night for the hut it was awesome and very romantic! You can walk along the beach to Lamai town area or rent a motorbike.
Never been to Phangan so can't comment on that. But Samui was fun and laid back.

Thanks for the information, very helpful!!!

Did you get a international license or is that unnecessary? Also, are teh backpacker huts safe for storing money, jewlery, etc.? thanks for the help.

Don't need an international license. Usually you rent the motorbike for the day and they hold your passport for the day, or you can pay a hefty cash deposit. Remember that Samui has a helmet law even though most people don't follow it. We actually got pulled over during a helmet sting operation. Police took the motorbike keys, made us get in line around the corner to pay a 300 Baht fine, you then show your receipt to the police and they give you the keys back!!! Go figure! Just a way to make money.
Beach huts are secure. They have a big padlock on the front door which you have the key to. On top of that we had locks on our backpacks which we strapped around bamboo, bed frame, etc. But then again we were doing long term travel so we didn't have jewelry. Just $10 silver rings (left our real wedding rings back home) and a $20 watch I bought at Wal-Mart before we left!
Travel Tips for Ko Phangan

the highlight of my trip to phangan would have to be trekking through the jungle with no guide. i recomend u try it, a friend and i had no clue as to were we were heading but we just thought we'd drive up the mountain on our 250cc dirtbikes and explore. we eventuly stopped next to a durian tree as ben nearly went over the handle bars from tackling the dangerous roadsthen had a nice smoke and a taste of a not yet ripe durian fruit.headed into the jungle on foot. it was so peacfull, all u could hear was birds and insects and we ended up seeing a camen in a small lake and an moniter lizard of about 5 foot in lengh wich was an awesome sight.
it was funny because we got to a small hut, wich was about 15 m infront and we saw these 2 dogs outside with nobody in sight. they caught eye on us first and started to bark and the only way past them was to walk straight past em. anyway we were sketching out so we both had sticks in our hands just incase then made our way towards them. in the end they both ran up to us and started to attack, defending their teritory, weimediatly ran past them and i got bit on the arm, nothing more than a few stitches and a rabies shot. we both had the sticks incase we got attacked but we didint use them.
still it was a hell of an experiance. the freedom of being solo travler, to be able to do what u want, when u want and how u want is what i miss and the sketchy bike rides to hadd rin with dogs chasing u. just there is a few dodgy people out there. does anybody know a big, fat, scottish man who lives on the island??? on the night of the black moon party in the jungle i met these girls and one was very drunk. i thought to myself i'll try and help her get sobberd up and then all off a sudden this big scottish bloke walked over to me, headbutted me to the ground and said if i lay another finger on his daughter he'll have me shot by local thais. naturally i was sorry to him and agreed to stay away.
if anybody does know him i would like it if u could tell me who he is, we cant have people like that trying to ruin our holidays.
Getting off the boat
by Teledude
You will be handily accosted by a mob of guides, cab drivers and others who want you to go with them to their resorts or use their cabs or whatever. You can't avoid going through them but please just be firm but polite. They are just trying to make money by the only means really available. They are aggressive but there's no need to be rude. Just relax enjoy being in Thailand.
ALL NIGHT DANCING
by mamasan69
In this rather dark photo is one of the many dancers that we saw along the beach. However, this guy didn't stop all night long, everytime we walked past him he was still going strong. He must have danced for 6-8 hours straight, only stopping for the occasional drink. The rising tide barely stopped him, as you can see, when I took the picture he was already standing in about 6 inches of water. You can also just make out another familiar site while at the F.M.P, guys pissing in the water, just off the beach area......hmmmmm......nice.

cool bar on the front, has a pool table and sky sports!!! the owner nang is cute wee thing, but i dont think she likes me anymore!!! her dad is actually the police chief on the island so she gets away with anything!! good bar though and right in the middle of things. To be fair though, if you want to party go to haad rin.
Bad opportunities II
by Sajt
After the party wehad to go back. I had the ticket in my hand. The problem was. I found like 15 speedboat deep in the water. And nobody want to bring me back. I asked around I tried to show my ticket - Off course I was drunk a bit :)))) - I found my boat anly after 15 minutes. So I had to stay in the water for 15 minutes. They broaght me back to the island. On the way I lost my hat because the high speed. When we arrived Ko Samui that was the first time to put us down right on the beach. They broaght me back to mybungalow, but I heard from my friends from Israel from the other Bungalow they had to catch a Taxi from the ferry to come back to the bugalow.
