Great buget hotel just off the beachfront.
Bungalows with ensuite, aircon and good service.
Right in the middle of chaweng and only 50 metres off the beach.

Was being rebuilt while we were there in August 06.

Transportation from the Ferry Pier to Lamai beach

by blandy62

What is the best way to go from the Ferry pier (coming from Sura Thani) to Lamai Beach and how much is the cost?

Songthaews (small truck used as a share taxi) service the 50km ring-road that circles Ko Samui and transport passengers from the piers to all the beaches. Fares start at about 20 baht for a short trip. Taxi drivers don't like using their meters so you have to negotiate a price before you leave - much more expensive. A motorbike taxi is another option - cheaper, but you still have to negotiate. Keep in mind there's a lot of serious motorbike accidents on Ko Samui.

We didn't see the songthaews, but found the taxis, or rather, they found us. Actually, we got a nice minivan for the 2 of us, I didn't see any car taxis. It was 400 Baht (a few weeks ago), the guy pointed out the price to us on a sign giving prices to different beaches. I don't know if there are cheaper taxis, but from what I read this is a normal price. We never found any taxis that would use a metre.

Travel Tips for Ko Samui

Lamai beach

by phil_uk_net

Lamai beach approaching sunset. This was where I stayed way back in 1987. When I returned in 2002 I stayed at Chaweng but I wasn't aware how busy it had become. Lamai, a quieter beach, would have been a much better choice.

A splash of colour, after your holiday!

by JessH about ART STUDIOS

Surprisingly, apart from beach-wear and souvenirs, Ko Samui is great for other shopping: ART!

All along Chaweng Beach Road, there are numerous smaller & larger art studios.
We were surprised at such a variety on this small island in Thailand, and marvelled at the incredible skill with which the artists re-created famous paintings of Da Vinci, Keith Haring, Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, etc. as well as creating their own individual artworks. You can usually bargain for better prices, especially if you've seen the same piece in many other shops. Quality will vary so it's advisable to shop-around and compare.

Not only paintings, but also carvings and statues are on display at various shops.

So instead of having a boring-old print of your favourite painting, buy yourself a proper painting! Fake, but at least it's affordable for "us normal people" – LOL!
I purchased a set of 4 re-created paintings by Swiss artist Franz Ruzicka, and paid a total of 800 baht (click on the picture to see them). They now adorn the wall above our bed, and I absolutely love the colours and the style of painting.

rent a motor bike

by yellowstar

Usually you can rent your motorbike via your guesthouse you're staying in. It's very easy to do and costs little.
It's also the best way to get around, to get to the waterfalls and to get to know other beaches.

gas is inexpensive, but you have to go to the fuel station and negotiate the price BEFORE getting the fuel. Otherwise they can ask for any price.

Be careful with the traffic. Although it's much better than on the mainland, you should be aware, that the Thais take a two lane road sometimes for a four lane road.

Food and ice cream

by Pomska

If you want to taste a delicious ice cream head for Baskin Robbins/Illy Cafe.

My favourite Italian restaurant in Koh Samui is Mamma Roma (Chaweng Beach Road close to Laem Dim Market). Enrico & Toi offer the best specialities and the warm Thai hospitality in a relaxing athmosphere. The price ranges 250-350 baht for two persons. It's really cheap and tasty!

Fishermans Village

by SamuiDean

Well worth a visit if want to escape the hustle and bustle of Chaweng. A good place to visit in the evening. There are many fine restaurants and bars situated along the beach. I can recommend The Happy Elephant, Smile House, La Sirene, and Starfish and Coffee.

All the restaurants offer good food with great views across to Koh Pha-Ngan.

I found the local people very friendly. Also checkout the local pancake man on his moped. He offers a great selection of pancakes for 20baht.
