Chaweng beach is the most touristy area of all Samui. There you will find the most restaurants/bars from fancy places to McDonalds, local eateries to Starbucks. If you guys want a quieter, calmer area still packing some nightlife head south to Lamai Beach.

If you haven't prebooked a hotel you can find everything in Samui from five star resorts to beach huts. My wife and I stayed in a fancy beach hut (with satellite tv, mini fridge, private toilet and shower, private deck) in South Lamai for 800 BHT (about $22 USD per night) which was awesome and right on the beach. That same place had rock bottom priced beach huts for 150 BHT (a little over $4 USD per night), very basic with a mattress, mosquito net and even a hammock on your own porch. No toilet though, just use the communal ones. Every Saturday night about 10:30PM there is free Muay Thai boxing in Lamai, its pretty cool.

You can rent a manual motorbike for 150 BHT for the entire day or 200 BHT for an automatic. Most places will require you to leave your passport until you return the bike. Practically nobody wears a helmet but Samui law requires only the driver to wear a helmet and not the passenger. I learned the hard way at a police sting operation checkpoint and got a ticket where you have to pay 300 BHT before the keys are given back to you. (Had a good laugh with some Aussies that got ticketed also).

Samui is a happening place. There are other beaches where you can stay but I recommend Lamai. If you guys just wanna party and have a wild time then Chaweng might be a bit better but Lamai is more laid back.

HIT THE BEACH

by mamasan69

While on Koh Samui everybody should try and spend some time on the beaches. I was on Chaweng beach and spent a little time near Lamai beach. Both of these are full of tourists, but this is to be expected as they are beautiful, and offer many activities. The white sand, pounding waves, and anything you want or need, all within a short walk, make this a great way to enjoy the day.
My brother and I didn't miss a day of swimming in our entire stay, and there is nothing better to shake the cobwebs(hangover), than a dip in the sea first thing in the morning. After a few too many buckets you will understand what I mean. The good part about this was that it was only a short stumble down the path from my hut to the beach.

The ferry from Donsak to Koh Samui

by coolbananas

From Donsak You can take two different ferries to Koh Samui. The cheap one takes one and a half hours; the trip by fast ferry takes only one hour. I took the slow boat, which was quite alright. It's an old Japanese ferry but this second-hand boat is still doing the job.

Good Food and Free Movies

by Jmill42 about English Bar

Directly in front of Charlie's Huts is a great English style pub, that serves great cheap food, beer, and shows your choice of DVD movies.

This is a perfect place to chill out and take a break from the sun, while eating some grub. The movies are of the illegally copied type, that are new in the theaters. As long as I didn't copy them, I think its alright to watch them! Got to see The Last Samurai for free!

Hat (Beach) Lamai

by Designerartgirl

Lamai beach was one of the emptiest beaches i found on koh samui, especially where i was staying and found i didnt have to walk all over tourists in order to have a tan... Not so many vendors either..
