Transportation on Island

by slyons81

Hello guys,
How is it getting around the island? Is it pretty easy inexpensive to get from beach to beach, or does it feel like a hassle. I'm staying up north in Bophut area but will want to make trips to perhaps Lamai, Mae Mam, or Tong Takien. How long do these trips take and are they expensive? Thanks for the help.

Getting around the island is easy. Your best bet will probably be to just rent a motorbike for the day. Especially if you plan on going back and forth throughout the day. We rented a motorbike while in Samui and drove all around the island! Just remember to wear a helmet, Samui has a helmet law even though most people don't wear one.

If you love where you're staying (as we did) you won't want to go explore other beaches, just relax where you're at. Have fun!

Globe,
I was pretty happy with Samui to start the trip but I've heard a few lousy reviews, I'd be lying if I said I'm not a little worried. You seem to know the Island well- we were planning on staying at the Bandara Resort for a few days in Bophut, we're looking for sun and beach, the town looks great but I heard the beach is not desirable, is this by thailand standards or any standrards? We want to stay away from Chaewang, sounds too busy. Where do you stay?

To answer your question. Its easy to get around.Mae nam and all other Towns you can easily do on a Day Trip. The island is small and well served by Public Transportation. All major Beach Towns are on the Island Ring Road.
Within 4 Days I had seen all major places.Personally liked Lamai Beach best.Chaweng least. You are well off in Bophut.

Travel Tips for Ko Samui

Full moon party

by clouds111

If you are lucky enough to be there during the full moon there are boats leaving several times daily from Big Buddha Pier (Bang Rak) and Maenam to Ko Phangan (Haad Rin beach)where the party is held. Just book your ferry ticket in any travel agency on the island, or directly on the pier. You can also go by a speed-boat from the Bo Phut or Maenam piers on the North of Koh Samui.

Real Home Cooking

by iwtgtj

We came across this simple local road-side eatery on our way to the snake farm near the south west tip of the island. The food is absolutely delicious - mom's home cooking quality as the name says it- and the owner offers great smiles to go with it.

It is on the 4170 road and about 700 meter before you hit Ban Thong Krut where you take the boat to the cultured pearl area.

Real Ko Samui.

Taxi's

by clouds111

Getting around Ko Samui is cheap and cheerful. Anything from around 100-250 bahts for short journeys. The taxi's are fun, jump on the back and away you go. Around Chaweng you'll never have trouble finding a taxi as they call out and honk their horn at you all day long! If you fancy a change there are also lots of mo-ped taxis, although I gave them a miss. Funny watching about 4 people squeeze onto one bike!

Cheap and local

by globetrotter06 about Local Restaurant in Nathon

Along the road and opposite of the harbour in Nathon there are a few local restaurants. Unfortunately I've forgotten the name of this one... But it was outdoors and quite simpel. I guess mostly the locals eat here. They did have an English menu, but did not speak English. However, it was so cheap. Ordered a soup, fried rice with chicken and a coke for 1 US$ (40 Baht)!

Sunny Morning

by hash09

I am waiting for the food to come... very hungry, taking late breakfast, with nice enviroment and very sunny day... i was so happy about it... take a look on a big smile i had... that means im happy.
