we are arriving in Bangkok on dec the 23rd. We have to get to Koh Samui for the 24th. Do you think we can get a space on a flight at this busy time of year if we just turn up on the day, if not a train? We dont want to end up stuck in the city for xmas day!
I think it maybe difficult to get a flight at short notice these days. Why not buy a ticket on the internet now to be on the safe side. It´s Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways who are trafficing the route Bangkok Suvarnabhumi to Samui.
If you take a train to Chumphun from BKK you have to go by ferry after Chumphun.
Trains/planes will all be fully booked. Obviously. Try hitchhiking if you really want to ruin your holiday.

Both Bangkok Air & Thai Airways web sites are showing seat availabilty on xmas eve...
Bangkok Airways have seats on the 6.00am 7.30 am 9.00am 6.45pm, 7.15 pm 8.15pm 8.30pm 9.00pm flights with a cost of 4585THB.
Thai Airways have seats on the 7.45am & 8.50am flights at a cost of 6460THB.
Have a look at www.seat61.com for some info on trains to Samui.
In my opinion there is nothing at all to be gained by waiting & not pre booking at any time let alone xmas time.
Bangkok Samui is a costly airfare at the best of times so unfortunatly you are going to pay a hefty price waiting so late.

Chewang Beach is very popular because of it's beautiful white sandy beach and crystal clear water. One can hire all manner of beach and water equipment. Comes alive in the evening with the restaurants, discos and shopping stalls doing a roaring trade. Accommodation is more expensive here. I loved it when I hired an inflatable bed and just floated around on the water, then used it back on the beach under the shade of a tree - heaven!
Light back pack to keep water, camera, etc. with you, and to stow-away your prized acquired possessions from shopping! Sandals, but also a good pair of walking shoes are highly recommended, no matter if you're "trekking" from shop to shop, or if you're planning to travel to the centre of the island.
For clothes: the lighter and thinner, the better!
In this tropical climate, anything heavier than a silk scarf clings to you in a very unattractive way - so go airy, light and baggy! Mosquito repellant is an absolute necessity when visiting any part of Thailand.
In general, the further inland you travel, the worse it gets. This may not be a malaria-hotspot, but being munched on continously during your holiday isn't pleasant.
Mosquitos are most "blood-thirsty" during dusk - so cover youself in spray, cream, gel, whatever you have! Oh, and keep a fan, etc. nearby: when the air is moving, they can't land on you easily. I know that most hats may make you look dorky, but I found mine essential to protect my face from getting fried in the sun! Even on a cloudy day, the sun on Samui has the power to burn you - so put on a hat! Waterproof sunlotion or oil: even if your not a huge fan of the aquatic activities, you'll be sweating a lot - so waterproof sun protection is vital to have for our pale little bodies ;-)
--> Bring some cat/dog toys, old towels, flea collars, shampoos, Frontline drops, etc. for the dogs & cats at the Samuidog Rescue centre.
Over the Christmas and perticularly for new years eve there would have been hundreds of these things released into the night sky everywhere around Samui.
They actually look like a giant condoms which float slowly into the night sky and are visable for seemingly kilometres and you can watch it rise for a good 15 minutes or so .
The idea is that you light a small circular burner at the end of the cone and then hold the cone down for 2 minutes while fills the cylinder with smoke and gas which causes the cones to rise slowly into the night sky.
I'm told that you should make a wish before letting it go,which is why they were so popular with couples on new years eve. Whatever feels comfortable.
Na Thon Pier is on the northwest of the island. The red car can take you there which costs 50B.
If your destination is Krabi, you can buy a joint-ticket at 380B. A bus will take you to another pier and get on the ship together. After arriving Surat Thani you'll change onto another bus that will drop you at Krabi. The whole trip spends 8 hours.

Whether you are in a restaurant
or on the beach,
drinking the refreshing coconut juice
and eating its tender meat
is refreshing under the hot sun.
And good for the kidneys too!
They are not very nutritious,
but they are a good source of fiber.
And sure beats any soft drink.
With 2 million coconuts that
are transported from
Koh Samui to Bangkok daily,
it's a wonder why this nut is so
popular all over Thailand.
