Sky Lanterns

by trevndebs

Can you buy the sky lanterns in Samui and are they OK to be launched from the beaches over there?
Cheers

Yes, you can buy sky lanterns on Samui. If you buy on the beach they may cost up to 300 Baht. Away from the beach in the local shops they cost from 120 Baht upwards. They are normally launched from the beach as this is the safest place to do so.

Travel Tips for Ko Samui

Elegant waitresses

by phil_uk_net

Chatting with the staff at this restaurant dressed in traditional clothing. They had gone to a lot of effort to look good so the least I could do was take their photo and show it to the world via VT!

Sail Rock

by ancient_mariner

Sail Rock is a rock formation strutting out in the middle of the sea a bit north of Koh Samui and Koh Tao. The rock has been used as target practice by the Thai Navy (or so I've heard), but the underwater formations are what makes the spot unique. Sail Rock has a 'chimney', a vertical cave starting from appr. 5 m and ending at a depth of 18 m. The chimney is said to be guarded by a trigger fish, couldn't see it, though.

LONG TIME FRIEND

by mamasan69 about RINGSIDE BAR

If you like Thai boxing like I do, then chances are you be near this bar. It is one of two bars that are located right outside the main boxing stadium on Chaweng.
I met one of the owners Emma at a different bar during my first trip, and just by chance ran into "her" again when I went to the boxing on my second trip.
The bar is owned by Emma and her boyfriend and it is a great place to have a few drinks before and/or after the boxing. It is not a very big bar but the staff is very pleasent and you can listen to music or watch TV if you like while drinking.
On my latest trip to Samui this bar was closed for my first few nights, but luckily opened up for my last few. I had a chance to visit with her again, and had a blast here with some other guys I met at the boxing.
Emma has become a good friend and a great person to talk to for me, great for some laughs, and I will keep in contact with her on future trips for sure. None required, it is an open bar, so the cooler the dress, the better.

great dinner in excellent location

by btkeough about Padma at Karma Resort

Great modern thai food.
I eat out a lot with work in the best restaurants but this was amazing.
A perfect setting by the sea, not very busy with the ocean and beach lit at night.
I honestly say one of the best meals ever.
Perfect for a sophisticated romantic dinner and great cocktails.
Anyone familiar with Longrain in Sydney will absolutely love this modern thai food. Chicken corn pepper - delicious

The Big Buddha, Koh Samui

by MickyT162

Wat Phra Yai or the temple of the Big Buddha was erected in 1972. It is a modern Buddha image which stands 12m tall against the light tropical blue sky and sea beyond. Meditation huts surround the image and beyond the main entrance stand five other statue images including a giant which is submerged into the sea along with a couple other images.

The temple is located on Ko Fan which is a small island just off the north east coast of Koh Samui. It is connected to Koh Samui by a small dust track or causeway that takes you into a small village type area mainly consisting of souvenir shops. At the center of these shops you will find the main entrance, beyond which and raised high up on the hillside stands the Big Buddha.
