Lamai vs Bophut

by slyons81

Hi all, planning honeymoon in July and have our Ko Samui leg of the trip narrowed down to Lamai or Bophut. I'm torn, the beaches of Lamai appear to be more pristine but the nightlife and social scene in Bophut seems very chill (this is essential) and colorful. Also, we're going in July and I know the water can get cloudy in parts of the country. I was just trying to get some input from you guys, pros and cons? Thanks for the help.

There's nothing pristine about the waters at Lamai, or on just about any other beach on Samui, for that matter. They've gotten polluted from leaking raw sewage and overuse by too many hotels. Are you sure you want to spend your honeymoon on Samui when there are better islands? If you are sure, think about Maenam instead. It's by far the cleanest of the 3 and you'll be close enough to Bophut as to not feel isolated. Otherwise consider Koh Lanta, Koh Tao or the far side of Koh Phangan.

Thanks, good to know. Can't say I'm not disappointed. The small bars and restaurants were a big draw to Bophut, will I find that in Ko Tao?

Yes, but on a smaller scale. Tao's mostly known for the diving but over the years it's grown into a smaller version of some of the more developed islands. Hopefully it'll never get as overdone as Samui!

I just replied to your other post (Phangan or Samui). We loved Lamai!

Was twice now in Lamai and it was great.Did'nt see the pollution at the Beach.
You want a bit of action thats the right place.Bohput is fine as well.I have visited all other beach towns and still prefer Lamai Beach.2 nd choice would be Bophut.Chaweng ,no thanks.Mae Nam to quiet for me.

Travel Tips for Ko Samui

Great Food

by jamiesamui

If your a first time traveller to Samui or Thailand in general you have no doubt heard some great things about the thai cusine & you will find that most of it is true. the only negative I have found & it`s nothing major,is the sometime small servings of the dish you have ordered. I have found the easiest way around this (if your with a group)is to order a number of dishes with a plate of steamed rice & share the dishes amongst yourselves. However if your by yourself like I was last time you might find yourself eating several more times than you`re used too especially between lunch & dinner(I know I did) I just love the place so I miss every thing

A little Ayuthaya - Chedi Spa

by XLH

I always thought being in Thailand necessitates one to have a traditional Thai massage. And this time, we chose a package to get our money's worth.
Well, the massage, as usual, was quite fantastic but the facial (i do have problems with blackheads) leaves something to be desired.
On the whole, the experience was pleasant due to being in an environment of Ayuthayan-like chedis and ruins but i would galdly trade that for a better facial!

Bangkok Air and Samui Airport

by austarman

There is just one airline that services the island of Koh Samui and that is Bangkok Airways.
They mostly run Boeng 717's but have some smaller planes that fly to Pattaya (U-Tapio)once a day.
The airport at Samui is no more than a group of grass thatched huts all joined together without walls.
The transport from the plane to the terminal hut is nothing more than a luggage cart with benchseats.
Very funny to see but very practical.

Hello Sunshine!

by alisonr about The Wave Samui

This place was set up a few years ago to cater to the different nationalities of tourist which come to Samui. They have english movies, games, a huge library and even a postal service to send your excess purchases back home! We had a really nice relaxing night here. Yummy food and then sat drinking vodka and sprites all night long.

They have a great menu with western food, can't remember if they have Thai, I was too focused on the Western! They also have rooms here which i didn't see.

They also support the Samui Dog Resuce Centre - coz if you have been to Samui you will know stray dogs are a problem. So you can donate money here too. They have a few dogs here, one is called Sunshine, he is white doggy with a few black spots. Say hello to him for me if you see him!

Na Muang Waterfall

by tere1

A nice place to go and get a bit away from the beach is the Na Muang waterfall. It's located aproximately 10 km from Nathon. You will have to walk a little to get there but it's worth the walk.

The waterfalls here are really nice and the lanscape surrounding them is beautiful.
