Krabi/Phi Phi or Ko Samui/Ko Pha-Ngan Areas

by jessi_pete

I am travelling for the first time to Thailand this December/January 2010-2011 and will be flying into Phuket 23rd December. I plan to spend 3 days in Phuket, 3 days in Krabi, 2 days in Phi Phi.
But would you recommend going to Ko Samui and Ko Pha-Ngan as well? If so, how many days should we spend in each place? What to see and do?
What I guess I need to know is Ko Samui/Ko Pha-Ngan worth the effort/cost/time of travel etc? Or should we spend more time around Krabi/Phuket?
Please help...I'm lost as to what to do! :)

My opinion is that you should forget about Phuket completely and concentrate on Krabi, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta.

Your I T is good and if you have the time and funds, go ahead and hop another island. Traveling in Thailand is cheap, food and accomendations inexpensive. I think that the highest cost is your roundtrip airfare. You are going in high season though and there is a crowd. If you are young, maybe you would like to go to the Full Moon Party. Either way enjoy Thailand. I go there twice a year and stay for months playing golf and going to the beaches and just exploring and enjoying the culture. I am thinking of retiring there because I spend more staying at home than I do when on vacation in Thailand. For 40 USD a day, I can live like a king, eat well, play sports, drink and hang out. I can not do this at home. Cheers Tommy x

I didn't go to Phuket but was in Krabi, Ko Phi Phi and agree with brotherleelove!

It's beautiful around Krabi and I loved every minute there!

Also wanted to go to Ko Samui but didn't make it. I think that's another crowd altogether. Explore as you wish. I got a few guidebooks in Bangkok and the most tempting places were around Krabi for me. Look at all options and follow your heart.
Have fun!

I Take it you only have 8 days in Thailand if so then stick to your original plan and stay on the Phuket side of Thailand and enjoy Krabi, Phi Phi Islands and Phuket. Their is plenty to do but if you have time for another week I would take Brotherleelove suggestion and go down to Koh Lanta and check it out or try another island in area.

AS for Koh Samui and Koh Pha-ngan and Koh Tao you can easily do on another trip.
Unless you really want to go to The Fullmoon/Halfmoon Parties on Koh Pha-ngan.

A lot people have different oppions about the these places in Southern Thailand, I have been to all apart from Koh Lanta and they all make a good desinations for a holidays. Sounds like you are making your own way around this area so you got the freedom to do what you want and if you don't like the area you can always move on and find any place that might interest you.

Thailand is dirt cheap to visit. We spent one night on Phuket and 2 nights on Phi Phi, getting the boat to Phi Phi Lei on the second day. Included in that was a trip to Monkey Beach. Well worth it.

Fly to Krabi directly and spend time here and Phi Phi Island. There are lots to do in Krabi province in addition to beaches - hot springs, cliffs, temples, etc.

Travel Tips for Krabi

Optional tours

by KChiong

I took the 4 islands (by longtail) and kayaking at Hong Islands. Prior to this, i surfed online and asked for rates from the various tour operators but sad to say, what they offered was quite expensive. My trip for 4 islands costed 350B and Hong Island for 1200B (per person with standard package) (www.seetho.com) I not advertising for them but do make comparisons before making a decision.

Walk from island to island!

by wynlim

At low-tide, you can walk out from Nopparatthara beach to two small little islands nearby. Watch hermit crabs scramble all over the sand, and you may see the local children digging the sand for shell-fish...or even the occassional octopus!

Food food and more food

by icebaby0 about Food

1) There is a small restuarant near J Hotel on the main road. Restaurant = small shop.
They offer green curry chicken + rice + a shake for 89 baht.

2) Food at AoNang Sunset Cafe is not bad. The steak cost 200 baht.

3) Food at Railay Beach is not bad. MUST try the fried ice-cream!

4) Food around at Krabi is cheap. Remember to check out this Muslim lady (with tutang) riding a bike shop called FRIED CHICKEN. Her fried chicken is really really GOOD! She is on the road nearer to J Hotel main road area. (i.e. Aonang Villa) As mention above.

Raeliy Beach

by icebaby0

A place you must go. Take the long tail boat ride there. Prices can range from 80 baht per person. (You can neg) The beach there is much better than AoNang. Lay in the sun and relax. Loads of small crabs (midgets....) but the sand is sooooooo much nicer. Lunch there was also good.

But remember to catch the long tail boat back!

Night Market

by Willettsworld

The market is located in the middle of the town and is a nice place to wander around to see all the different types of fruit and veg including some strange looking green beans things that I've never seen before. There's also cooked and snack food to be have here with a couple of stalls selling a large choice of different dishes, some selling various types of meat and fish on sticks and another selling sausages wrapped in some kind of batter.
