Krabi vs Phuket

by muratkorman

Dear VT members,

I plan a 3 day visit to either Phuket or Krabi at the end of March 2008. All I want is to enjoy some nice beaches and see some close islands with a boat. Which place would you suggest, Phuket or Krabi?

Many thanks

phuket, for nighlife and variety of beaches.Either way, Krabi and Phuket are both equidistant to famous Phi Phi Island which is one of the reason why peeps flocks that southern part of thailand.Krabi has rock climbing options, while Phuket is home to tons of 5 stars hotels and resorts from marriot to hilton.

If u have just 3 days, I guess , I will choose Krabi and stay at the secluded private Central beach resort which is just 45 minutes by speedboat to Phi Phi Island....

Travel Tips for Krabi

Clothes

by GracesTrips

Because the weather is hot and humid, you will find yourself changing clothes often. In Railay West, there is a laundry service that is pretty cheap but I don't know what the turn around time is for that.

Hat Yai - Krabi

by aniquez

Once in Hat Yai, get to the Bus Terminal which is on the sourthern part of Hat Yai. Buy the bus ticket at the counter which is tad cheaper than the usual van. It cost me about 173 BHT only to go to Krabi by an express bus Hat Yai - Krabi - Phuket..

The bus leaves every half and hour to Phuket. I took the 8.00 am bus and the trip was only 3 hr 45 min to reach Krabi.

The bus terminal in Krabi is not very big. There are a few small restaurants and some small shops next to it.

The Food Is Great In Railay West Beach As Well!

by DarkRay about Sand Sea Resort's Sunset Restaurant

The restaurant is located right in the centre of the Railay West Beach, offering a very good view of the sea while you dine. Service was good and the price was great. Their refreshing and thirst quenching fruit juice shakes (50 baht) are the best I had ever tried. Including non-alcoholic drinks and tips, my friend and I spent about 500 baht for our entire meal which consisted of:

1. Crab Meat Stir Fried with Crushed Pepper
2. Fish Stir Fried with Ginger and Spring Onion
3. Special Fried Rice Crab Meat Stir Fried with Crushed Pepper is without doubt my favourite dish in this restaurant. There was no need to crack open any shells to obtain the meat since only the meat is used in this dish and they were stir-fried to perfection with freshly crushed black pepper. Best of all, it's only 100 baht!

Ao Nang village

by clouds111

Ao Nang was originally a small fishing village as many of the villages were but now it attracts many tourists, probably too many. I arrived at the end of November and it was relatively quiet but as soon as December hit, swarms of tourists arrived and prices were driven up. Ao Nang has a much nicer feel to it, sterilised almost and this attracts a lot of families and is a big contrast to the likes of Samui. There isn't much nightlife, not much hassle from shop owners or sellers on the beach and GoGo bars are almost extinct, although there are some hidden away behind the beachfront shops.

Ao Nang is perfect for families or people looking for a sterilised version of Thailand but it's not the Thailand I know and love.

Sa Phra Nang Trail - what would Indiana Jones do?

by iNorv9

On the path from East Hat Railay to Hat Tham Phra Nang is the trailhead to the Sa Phra Nang (Holy Princess Lagoon). This is not a hike for the faint of heart; the trail starts with a precipitous climb up a steep hill covered in tree roots.

Once at the top, you can proceed in two directions. To the left is an astounding view of the West and East Hat Railay double bays. To the right is a sheer descent towards the pool. Fortunately there is a sturdy system of knotted ropes along most of the trail, otherwise the hike would be viritually impossible. Even so, some potentially dangerous free-form rock climbing is also necessary to make it down to the lagoon.

The lagoon itself is surrounded on all sides by sheer limestone cliffs, and is quite a marvel. Makes for a rewarding dip at the end of a strenuous hike.

Quick tip: This is a very demanding hike, but I saw a group of middle age Japanese women in sandals make it to the top. I doubt they made it down to the pool, but at least they were able to enjoy the view. Also, beware the changing tides.... don't let your stuff get soaked.

Bottom-line: This was definitely a highlight of my trip to Krabi. For those of you who enjoy a physical challenge, DON'T MISS this hike.
