No shoes at the temple
by zrim
Shoes are strictly forbidden at any Buddhist temple. It would be an insult of the greatest magnitude to enter a temple building without first removing shoes. Shorts are frowned upon. However, visiting a remote temple like Wat Bang Riang as part of a daylong excursion it is not expected that visitors will have long pants (it was well over 30C that day). The expectations are different in the cities and in the more important temples. It is probably best to ascertain the dress code before venturing to a temple to avoid bad feelings and embarressment on all sides.
Cocktail Bar with a different flavour...
by M0B1US about Night Market Juice Bar
In the middle of the main night market we came across this juice bar operator who was a whirr of frenzied activity - this guy must've been being fed intravenously by a barrel of Red Bull hidden under his counter because he was an unstoppable blur. We tried getting a decent picture of him - he's the one in the green.
Still, we couldn't do him justice and you had to be there to believe it! It was fantastic entertainment and the drinks were fabulous too! A nice big Papaya and Guava juice for less than 50p - absolute heaven! :-)
Delicious Thai Chinese Fare
by DarkRay about Ao Nang Cuisine
Ao Nang Cuisine is one of the oldest restaurant in Ao Nang and serves a mean Thai Chinese fare. Their chef is an award winning one too as well.
My friend and I had:
1. Herbal Prawns (steamed prawns with vermicelli)
2. Chinese Vegetables Stir-Fry with Garlic and Oyster Sauce
3. Ao Nang Fried Rice
4. Crab Meat Fried Rice
There was not much of any ambience since it's a "no frills" kind of restaurant, but it is good value for money as including the non-alcoholic drinks we had and the tips we gave, my friend and I spent a total of only 500 baht. Not bad, considering the fare we are having and that it is after all located in a "touristy" place. My favourite dish was the Crab Meat Fried Rice. It definitely deserves a better rating than the already delicious Ao Nang Fried Rice. Cannot really pinpoint why it is the best, but it just taste better.
Beaches & Boats
by littlebush
Charter a long boat from one of the guys down by the harbour in Krabi town. Barter a good deal. 3 of us paid 400baht each(£6) for a full day going to about 3/4 islands and stopping at 2 of them. Most go to Poda and Chicken island. Take a snorkel for some good snorkelling.
The beaches - go to Railie to the great beaches in the area. Also to Ao Phra Nang, one of Thailands best beaches. At the beaches there a few cafes to chill at, plus diving, and also loads of rock climbers.
Wat Tham Seua - Tiger cave temple as its known is about 15 minutes ride in a Songthaew. This is where a load of monks live in caves in the middle of the jungle! You can climb up 1237 steps (and they are bloody steep steps) to a shrine that the monks climb to worship. It is very very very tiring, especially in the humidity , but the view is rewarding and also knowing what the monks go through!!
East Railay Beach
by travelpug
It's about 5 minutes walk from West Railay. East Railay is not really a beach for swimming. It is more like a mangrove area. Accomodations are available and slightly cheaper that on the West side. There are some restaurants and bars to hangout here. Ferry to Phi Phi Island leaves from here in the morning. Buy your tickets at tour agency.
