How hard is driving in Krabi/Phuket?

by labeating

How difficult is driving a car and navigating the roads in Krabi & Phuket? Do you recommend this?

Speaking as somebody who has driven several times in Thailand, including around Bangkok, my opinion is that the Phuket/Krabi area is one of the best areas in the country for driving. My one word of warning is to make sure you have good maps.

If you are staying around Krabi and only need to go to/from restaurants etc, then use the tuktuks. Lots of them all over and cheap. You can rent a car and the traffic is not too bad in both Phuket and Krabi. I have rented cars in both places and in BKK too. Rent from recognised agencies only.

Travel Tips for Krabi

Snorkeling at nearby Islands

by GracesTrips

Snorkeling in Krabi! We stayed on Railay Beach and I had researched various boat tours to the local islands to snorkel at. Green Planet Tours seemed to be quite reasonable (450 baht per person or US$13.64) but there was a reason for that. I think I saw other boat tours for 1200 baht per person. Green Planet takes you to 4 islands (more like 3), provides lunch (hot chicken, vegetable dish with rice- that was pretty good) and snorkel gear/life jackets. We traveled on a long tail boat not a speed boat as the brochure shows you. So, getting to the islands takes some time. The islands we went to were Poda Island, Tup Island and Chicken Island. We also stopped off at Phranang Beach where we waded through the water to climb upon a cave area. Total time was about 4 hours.

Safety tip - make sure to put sunscreen on your back several times during the day. You don't feel the sunburn because you're in the water but the sun is quite intense. Sun Screen

Longtail boats to the beaches

by don_thomas

You can take one of the longtail boats from the old pier in Krabi (Thanon Khongkha) to basically anywhere; for instance the beautiful beaches of Rai Leh or one of the islands around. To Rai Leh takes you about 45 mins and is very affordable and a adventure in itself.

Italian

by leffe3 about Azzurra

Just for a change, decided to try Italian, not really expecting that much. We were very pleasantly surprised, dicovering that the pizzas and pasta were all excellent. This may have been because the owner's mother had just come in from Naples! But as she was happily sitting in the corner watching, I think the standard of the food remains true even when mamma isn;t there!
Simple, homely environment overlooking the beach. With the red check table clothes it coudn;t be anything else other than an Italian restaurant. Calzone was excellent

Tat Poom River

by winnietankl

It is also known as Crystal River. The river water is so clear and reflecting the original watercolor, which is green blue. There are some fresh water coral, plants, fish, prawn, crab and other river habitant. You can swim freely in the river and the water is believed to flow from paraside and it can clean up our sin and sickness as well. Don't miss it. It's still under renovation for the time being so not allowed to swim in this river. It open daily from morning around 9am till 5pm. The entrance fee is 50 baht (1.50 USD) for adult and 30 baht (80cents USD) for children.

Railey West

by gib157

Just a 5 minute walk from Railey East, Railey West is a stunning bay flanked by huge cliffs all around. Many restaurants and hostels here. The beach gradient is very low and so the waves come in for quite a way. The sunsets here are very popular.
