Ao Luek Province/Krabi

by frecklesoup

Hi,I'm signed up to do some volunteer work in the Ao Luek province of Krabi this coming December. Is anyone familiar with this area? What can you tell me about it's location and what the area is like? Also, I hear December is high season. What can I expect for temperature/rainfall? and how are the mosquito's at that time? I'll be living with a local family, and hints about what this might be like would be appreciated!

thanks in advance!
connie

Average December:

Temps: High: mid 80's F, Low: mid 70's F

Rain: yeah it's possible, but if it does, it should be minimal.

Mosquitos: They'll be some around, especially after dark, so I think it's always best to have some 'spray-on' repellent.

Travel Tips for Krabi

Diving and Snorkeling

by Svitata

The islands off Krabi are great places to dive and to snorkel. The water is clear and very clean and there are lots of marine life around the islands. Many local tour agencies organise dive and snorkel trips for half a day or full day.

Fly to Krabi

Air Asia flies to Krabi from Bangkok as well as Kuala Lumpur. There are 3 flights daily from Bangkok to Krabi. From Kuala Lumpur, there are only one flight per day on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Flight from Bangkok takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. Flight from Kuala Lumpur takes 1 hour 15 minutes.

Airfare depends on availabily or promotions.

Lavinia Restaurant

by Cathy&Gary about Lavinia Restaurant

Lavinia Restaurant is a lovely place for breakfast.
They have a bakery so all the rolls and breads are baked daily.

A favorite here were the fresh rolls filled with bacon, cheese and salad.
They also make the best icy cold milkshakes.

If your after somewhere cheap to stay they have a guesthouse behind the restaurant, while we were there rooms were advertised for 500baht per night.

Lavinia Restaurant is on Ao Nang beach road.

Nosey Parker's Elephant Trekking

by iNorv9

The Nosey Parker elephant camp is located about 7km from Ao Nang, right in the middle of a lush forest bordered by dramatic limestone cliffs. This made for a pleasant elephant trek (1 hour round trip) amongst the teak and rubber trees. The terrain does get a little steep at times, which makes things a little more exciting, but ultimately the elephants are able to make their way through with relative ease. At the end of the trek, you'll get to feed them sugar cane and carrots, as well as take all the pictures you want.

Quick tip: One of the highlights was seeing the elephants take a bath in the river.... They bathe twice a day, around 11am and 4pm.

Cost: about 800 baht/$20 for the base program, 1,650 baht/$40 for the longer half day tour. Half price for children.

Transportation: Round-trip transportation from your hotel in the Krabi area is included; our driver was punctual and very friendly.

Bottom-line: Not many other places where you'll be able to get this close and interact with the animals in such a beautiful setting. A lot of fun, highly recommended.

Elephant Riding

by M0B1US

As a part of the James Bond Discovery tour, you get a half an hour ride on the back of an elephant with the Island Safari company which takes you on a quick circuit along a stream bed and around a couple of stands of trees - not exactly the beautiful rainforest as advertised and more like someone's large and overgrown backyard...

However for the novelty value of riding on the back of an elephant for a short while, the route was adequate and long enough.

I think half an hour was more than enough as it wasn't the most comfortable of rides and I think it must take a little getting used to - especially over longer distances.

I actually feel sorry for anyone booking a day trek as I can imagine you'd be pretty sore afterwards!

I therefore recommend against doing a full day of elephant riding...

The other misgiving I had was that the handlers had these metal hooks on short sticks that they used to control the elephant back digging it into the back of the ear.

I have to say that none seemed to be mistreated by their handlers as they represent the living of the handlers who actually lived onsite with their elephants - however the potential is there.

But then horses are controlled with a combination of whips, heels and spurs. So it is a question of just how cruel it is to turn animals into beasts of burden...
