Transport around Krabi

by Enewons

Hello fellow Vters,
Six of us will be going to Krabi for 2 nights later this month. We are flying Air Asia and would like to know if we can hire a van or 4wheel tut tut to meet us at the airport and maybe to also take us around if it is not too expensive. We will be staying in the town but would also like to visit the beach. Are there interesting places to visit. Also we would like to try the local food so would welcome some suggestions.
Thank you.

There are cheap airport shuttles into Krabi Town, and once you're there you can find whatever you need for exploring the area.

Hi...I've been in Krabi last Aug with friends (5 of us).The season was not so good, aug-nov is raining season in Krabi. We stayed at K-Guest House for 3 days in Krabi & 3 days in Blue Bay Guest House in Ao Nang (all low budget guesthouse, price is 150-250 baht with aircon & shower inside the room).

You can hire 2 taxis for 6 persons, price is not so expensive (200-300 baht) & you can share among 6 of you guys. Dont hire tuk tuk at the airport, it's very very expensive. Or you can hire swangtee (a traditional pick up car) from airport to town, but I dont know the price.

A lot of interesting places in Krabi.
1.There's a traditional night market near by the port of Krabi (forgot the name of the market) sells a lot of traditional thai foods. It opens every night.
2. You should visit the biggest budha statue not only in krabi town but also biggest in thai, it's near by "tiger cave". But you should climb aroun 1237 stairs to reach it bcause it's located in top of the mountain. The view is awesome, you can see krabi town to aonang clear enough.
3. You must to go to phi phi island, take a 1 day tour from Krabi to phi phi island. Or you can go to 3 island (you can take 1 day tour also).
4. Try kayaking near Aonang or rock climbing in railey beach.
5. Elephant riding .... looks fun too....:)p

Well, if you have any question, you can email me.
Have fun in Krabi !

Thanks Atta and Brotherleelove.
I just hope the weather will not be too wet when we are there. If it is raining I suppose we would not be able to go to the 3 islands trip if it is an open boat. The market should be interesting as we like to see how the locals live.
Cheers.

Weather permitting you must go to Phi Phi and lovely Railay.

The weather is not as bad as the guide books will have you believe. There are days where it rains all day long, but they are rare. The lonely planet says this is the monsoon season (which it is) but it hasn't rained in days... it is somewhat overcast, but with the gamble on the weather comes prices that are half as much.

Travel Tips for Krabi

Admire the caves close up

by Tenzin

At Ao Talane about 30 minutes drive from Ao Nang, we went kayaking as part of the half day tour package. My wife was hesitant initially but as she gathered confidence she began to enjoy the 2 hrs rowing as we all did. The guide took us on the calm emerald waters into the brownish ones at the mangrove swamp. If your eyes are sharp and quick, you will get to see macaques, kingfishers and monitor lizards. A waterproof bag is provided for your camera and binoculars. Just wear your life jackets and you are ready to go. It's a good idea to learn from the guide how to steer the kayak before venturing forward. Saves a lot of arguing with your partner later.

The easiest way to get around Krabi is to rent a car or motorcycle. Motorcycle rental is very cheap there, only 200baht per 24 hour. Traffic is not heavy there and road conditions are reasonably good.

Satays and other meaty treats

by clouds111 about Various

If you hadn't noticed yet Thailand is all about the street vendor and some of the best food can be had from these. There are many dotted around Ao Nang selling satay sticks, dried squid, some kind of sausage on a stick, pad thai/noodles and other meaty treats. Many have their own seating area but most don't and for 20 bahts will pop your satays in a small clear plastic bag and the sauce in another for you to take away.

Many people worry about how fresh the food is which is sold from the street vendors but I never had any problems and we ate this stuff nearly every day. The meat looks fresh and is cooked from scratch right in front of you. Probably safer than most of the touristy restaurants anyhow.

Tiger Cave Temple

by sacrebleu

So that's one thing you can do if it rains. Go to Wat Tham Suea which is situated 5km from Krabi Town. It's built in a valley and surrounded by beautiful forested mountain and caves.
I was very impressed by the temple and was expecting somewhat small and more traditional. It's like no other temples and you can have a walk to find the hundred years old banyan tree in the forest. Beware of the unfriendly dogs habitating in the caves inside the forest though. I didn't do much hiking as much as I wanted to because I was afraid of the dogs. They wanted food so badly and they would follow you around. It was very interesting to see how they have lamps in the forest and munks living in small houses there though. Originally we wanted to try to find the hot spring but we managed to find the Tiger Cave temple instead. I was glad we went. It is a must see place.

They are currently building a big standing guan yin inside a Chinese style padoga.

Phi Phi Island

by travelpug

Do not miss Phi Phi Island. It would be nice if you have time to stay on the island a night or two. If you don't, a day trip is a must!! One of the most beautiful islands in Thailand, if not the world!
