Good beach in Krabi

by szucskrisz

Hi,

My wife and I are planning to go to Thailand in April. 3 days in Bangkok and 7 on the beach. Can anybody recommend a good beach for us? We don't want a busy beach like Patong, just a quiet one with not so many tourists but walking distance from restaurants etc. Preferably one which has white sand and is good for snorkelling. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Kris

Hi,
Maybe Surin Beach in Phuket is something for you. It's not too many tourists and there are quiet restaurants along the beach. It's located just north of Kamala beach, and easy to get there from Phuket airport. Kata Noi in Phuket is also very nice, however slighly more tourists there.

Oh... I didn't notice you dual-posted this question on both Krabi and Phuket section. Sorry about that.

From Krabi Town hop on the ferry to Koh Lanta. The further south on Lanta you go the quieter it is.

On Koh Lanta there are inexpensive snorkeling excursions available that take you out to the amazing limestone karsts offshore.

Ao Nang is close to Krabi, there is two (different kind of) beaches, the norhern is more quiet (Nopparathara is the south, forget just the name of the other). But Ao Nang is quite aggresseve-sale occupied nowadays, as my co-virtual previously wrote, take Koh Lanta. Once been there and miss back. Small town on the north, small villages around, some 5 westbound beaches, tourists of course, but not as busy as Ao Nang (reason might be muslim influence). Don't miss street market, you can have home made curries for example.

When in April are you going to Thailand? It'll be quite busy around April 13-20, as it's Thai new year. Make sure you book your flight/bus ahead of time.

In Phuket or Krabi, there aren't any beaches with good snokelling close to the shore. You'll have to take a day trip out, and you can book a tour with a local agent when you arrive.

As for a quiet beach that is within walking distance to restaurants, there are many choices, Kata and Karon in Phuket are the busiest after Patong Beach. Kamala, Surin, Mai Khao in Phuket all have long stretch of beach, and people are quite spread out. As said before, Ko Lanta has a number of beaches that never get too busy.

Travel Tips for Krabi

Buying silver

by bulldogtwo

If you are going to Krabi then I will assume that you are going through Bangkok??? That is where I would get it if you are not going to chiang mai. You are going to have a better selection and it's going to be a lot cheaper. There are hundreds of places to get it around Bangkok, if you have the time shop around for the best deals and you'll be happy.
Have fun

Ban Ao Nang

by Tenzin

Ao Nang is 20 km west of Krabi town. From here the strip of land parallel to the sea is akin to a mini- Patong Beach in Phuket minus the whiff of raw sewage. On our first day there it rained non stop for 24 hours. We kept ourselves occupied by having my hair cut, her nails done and of course Thai massages. All in for just US $30 for both of us at the shop across our Best Western Ban Ao Nang Hotel.

Longtail boat from Ao nang to Railey Bay or others

by Sambawalk

It costs 60 baht during daylight till 7pm beteen Ao nang beach and Railey Beach or vice versa. AFter 7pm 100 baht. You can also charter a whole longtail boat to local islands, like 4 islands. See pic for the full price list.

Shell Fossil Beach

by Tina-Perth

Reputedly, these shell fossils are 75 million years old. Millions upon millions of gastropod shells are deposited here, they are layered between 1 and 2 metres deep.

The scenery is dramatic and very interesting, as you can see from the pictures here.

There is a museum with lots of historical and geological information for those who are interested. The park is shady and pretty, making it a perfect spot for a stop-off on a long drive.

There's not much else, but if you are in the area, it is worth stopping to take a look.

Take a Speed Boat Tour!

by DarkRay

Although somewhat touristy, a Speed Boat tour will let you visit the most amount of places in the shortest amount of time. There are various packages with different destinations such as:

1. Phi Phi Islands
2. Krabi 4 Islands
3. James Bond Island
4. Hong Island
5. etc...

They are all probably very good, but what I took was the first package which included 8 destinations, although the number of destinations may differ, depending on the operator:

1. Phi Phi Don
2. Phi Phi Ley's Maya Bay
3. Phi Phi Ley's Phi Ley Cove
4. Phi Phi Don's Ton Sai Village (Lunch)
5. Phi Phi Ley's Viking Cave
6. Hin Klang
7. Monkey Beach
8. Bamboo Island

"S&S" refers to swimming and snorkelling.

Unfortuantely, due to heavy rains, although we did bypass destination 5 and 6, we did not go into Viking Cave nor snorkel and swim at Hin Klang. It would had been somewhat dangerous as Hin Klang is in the deep sea area and both the winds and saves were strong. We skipped Monkey Beach altogether as well.

Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the trip very much! :-)
