Nice Peaceful Lodging

Good value for money with the good service and friendly staff. There's hot showers, individual air-conditioning, HBO, a mini fridge and 24hrs electricity. Buffet breakfast which consists of local and international cuisines are served daily from 0730hrs to 1030hrs. Rooms are made daily and water is topped up unless requested not to.

There's a massage, laundry and internet service available within the resort itself. Somehow, the restaurant does not seem to draw a crowd during dinner as guest seem to flock to nearby restaurants which has a nicer ambiance though the food served is not bad too.

All in all, this resort is a good place to relax and its good value for money.

Unique Quality: There's a pool near the entrance of the resort and its only a 5min walk from Railay East where boats from Ao Nammao Pier stops.

Nothing Fancy but Steps from the Water!

I found an article in a general travel magazine touting the 26-acre complex of the Rayavadee where doubles start at US$1,127! Yikes! The article continued with an option at the Sand Sea Resort where doubles start at US$65! Huh? Sounds really, really cheap! I checked out the website and they have cottages with air conditioning and showers at about US$100 per night. The bungalows come with air conditioning or a fan and NO shower. The reviews I've read about the resort were very, very good. Complaints I read were - the bungalows with fan was still too hot and some complained about the food.

Well, let me tell you first hand....I really enjoyed staying here! Breakfast was included in our room price and as far as breakfasts go - this was pretty decent. A buffet spread of fruits, vegetables (for salad), usually some kind of egg, sausage (I consider as hotdogs), either rice - french toast - potatoes, breads, juice, coffee, tea and an omlet station. The accomodations were not luxurious but quite comfortable. We definitely had plenty of room. I enjoyed the Adirondack chairs out front. The shower worked well but to use the bath tub, you need to unscrew the water flow limiter (we found this out our last day) otherwise the water pressure was too little and it would take hours to fill the tub. Definitely, opt for airconditioning! It is hot here and probably any other time of the year! Our cottage was right by the pool. Only two cottages face the beach and the beach is still quite a distance but you can sorta see it. For what you pay, it's a real bargain! 3,120 baht per night - stay 4 nights, only pay for 3. That comes out to US$71.00 per night during the off season. Pay with a credit card, they will add a 3% transaction fee. There is no telephone in your room but up at the front of the resort is an internet cafe and phone service. They charged me 10 baht per minute.

Staying here gave me the sense of staying in a tropical place. Definitely, Railay West Beach is much, much better than staying in Railey East!

Unique Quality: Additional Information: This area of Railay is easily accessible by boat. This resort will provide the airport transfer for 1,200 baht for 2 persons one-way. I've seen the airport transfer as high as 2,000 baht on other sites.

Also, there are many other sites to book your reservations for this resort. This is deceiving because you might think it's the resort's official website but it is not - these are other travel agencies. The link below is the hotel's official website.

The official website will not allow you to make an on-line reservation for a sweet cottage - only the bungalows. At the bottom of the screen, there is an email address (hotmail) where you can email your reservation request (this is what I did).

Nice Bungalow/Resort in Railay, Krabi, Thailand

I was there in 1/03 and tried to go again one year later, but I did not book early enough. This is a mid-upper level bungalow resort right in the middle of Railay, the rock climber's paradise in Krabi. The bungalows are spaced far enough apart to have privacy. The grounds are very nicely landscaped, adding a more natural atmosphere than most others in its class. It has a good restaurant on the west beach (which is much nicer than the east beach). You must book at least a couple months in advance for peak-season stays (mid-December-early January). Staff was very friendly.

Unique Quality: The tropical garden setting is very nice. It's location in Railay is very good - on a nice beach with easy access to everything (Railay is small anyway). There is a new pool now, which I have not seen. There is a room for traditional Thai massage, alongside a small convenience store and travel/tour office with internet access.

West Railay Accommodation

Sand Sea Resort is a nice complex fronting west railay beach. A path through the resort takes you to East Railay. There are a variety of bungalows set in a nice garden, which gives the place a real tropical feel. West Railay beach is beautiful, with soft white sand and clean water. Compared to Ton Sai, West Railay is much nicer for swimming or lying on the beach. There are a variety of bars and restaurants in the area, and you can hire kayaks along the beach. There is also a beach volleyball court.

Unique Quality: Sand Sea is a good place for families or those who are willing to pay for a few more comforts. We didn't actualy see any of the rooms because the resort was full and out of our budget, but they look very nice from outside. Room rates range from 900 Baht for a standard fan room (2 people, 500 Baht per extra person) to 2100 baht for a delux air conditioned bungalow (for two, 650 Baht per extra person). These rates include tax and breakfast and were printed in Feb 2003. Sand Sea also has a pool and a great restaurant, serving Thai, Chinese and Western cuisine.

Krabi - Railay West or Aonang

by olie92

Hi all,

Planning to go to krabi in the end of November. Still abit confused whether to stay in Aonang area or Railay. My wife and I just want to sit and relax and do some island hopping for snorkling for 4-5 days. Any suggestion? Btw, how's the situation in the Southern Thai these days? Any insights are very welcome. Thanks

Olie

How about 2 days in Aonang and 2 days in Railey. Krabi is pretty safe, just stay away from the deep south Yala province.

I'm going to Thailand in 3 weeks! For half of our trip, we will be staying in Railay at the Sand Sea Resort. The best way to get there is by boat from the Krabi airport. There are only a handful of hotels to stay at in Railay but I've done my research and it's supposed to be the most beautiful beach in this area. Our plan is also to do some snorkeling at various nearby islands. My plan is to call Green Planet Tours in Aonang. I've read that they will come to Railay to pick you up. The Sand Sea Resort can be very inexpensive but...you will get the accomodations that fit the price. We opted for a cottage with shower and air conditioning. Some do not have showers and some just have fans.
I hear the protests are mostly in Bangkok near the government offices. I've been keeping tabs on that, too.
This is my first trip to Thailand but I've done so much research about the country, various cities and resort areas that I feel like I know it quite well already. I can't wait!

I have been to Railay, & its beautiful, one side of the island has a beautiful beach , with monkeys hanging out of the trees, and stealing the vendors corn off the beach quite a funny site. The other side is more mangrove. It takes about 15 mins to walk from one side to the other. In the middle of the island is a Lagoon, its weird to try and explain it but what you have to do is climb up a mountain , it's pretty steep ( not sure how old you and your wife are but if your fit it can be done ) it's an adventure to say the least they have rope to help you climb up then once your up the top you climb down, also quite steep some bits you sort of have to absail down the rock( No saftey connection ) . but once you get down there its this beautiful clear lagoon with volcanic rock the whole 360 degrees around you.
Night life is also quite good not to roudy but not dead silent.
Hope you enjoy your trip !!!
