A bungalow at San Sea Resort by Jez79 Sand Sea Resort is a nice complex fronting west railay beach. A path through the resort takes you to East Railay. There are a variety of bungalows set in a nice garden, which gives the place a real tropical feel. West Railay beach is beautiful, with soft white sand and clean water. Compared to Ton Sai, West Railay is much nicer for swimming or lying on the beach. There are a variety of bars and restaurants in the area, and you can hire kayaks along the beach. There is also a beach volleyball court.
Sand Sea is a good place for families or those who are willing to pay for a few more comforts. We didn't actualy see any of the rooms because the resort was full and out of our budget, but they look very nice from outside. Room rates range from 900 Baht for a standard fan room (2 people, 500 Baht per extra person) to 2100 baht for a delux air conditioned bungalow (for two, 650 Baht per extra person). These rates include tax and breakfast and were printed in Feb 2003. Sand Sea also has a pool and a great restaurant, serving Thai, Chinese and Western cuisine. I found an article in a general travel magazine touting the 26-acre complex of the Rayavadee where doubles start at US$1,127! Yikes! The article continued with an option at the Sand Sea Resort where doubles start at US$65! Huh? Sounds really, really cheap! I checked out the website and they have cottages with air conditioning and showers at about US$100 per night. The bungalows come with air conditioning or a fan and NO shower. The reviews I've read about the resort were very, very good. Complaints I read were - the bungalows with fan was still too hot and some complained about the food. Well, let me tell you first hand....I really enjoyed staying here! Breakfast was included in our room price and as far as breakfasts go - this was pretty decent. A buffet spread of fruits, vegetables (for salad), usually some kind of egg, sausage (I consider as hotdogs), either rice - french toast - potatoes, breads, juice, coffee, tea and an omlet station. The accomodations were not luxurious but quite comfortable. We definitely had plenty of room. I enjoyed the Adirondack chairs out front. The shower worked well but to use the bath tub, you need to unscrew the water flow limiter (we found this out our last day) otherwise the water pressure was too little and it would take hours to fill the tub. Definitely, opt for airconditioning! It is hot here and probably any other time of the year! Our cottage was right by the pool. Only two cottages face the beach and the beach is still quite a distance but you can sorta see it. For what you pay, it's a real bargain! 3,120 baht per night - stay 4 nights, only pay for 3. That comes out to US$71.00 per night during the off season. Pay with a credit card, they will add a 3% transaction fee. There is no telephone in your room but up at the front of the resort is an internet cafe and phone service. They charged me 10 baht per minute. Staying here gave me the sense of staying in a tropical place. Definitely, Railay West Beach is much, much better than staying in Railey East!
Additional Information: This area of Railay is easily accessible by boat. This resort will provide the airport transfer for 1,200 baht for 2 persons one-way. I've seen the airport transfer as high as 2,000 baht on other sites. Also, there are many other sites to book your reservations for this resort. This is deceiving because you might think it's the resort's official website but it is not - these are other travel agencies. The link below is the hotel's official website. The official website will not allow you to make an on-line reservation for a sweet cottage - only the bungalows. At the bottom of the screen, there is an email address (hotmail) where you can email your reservation request (this is what I did).
