Narathiwat
"simple and big contrasts"
Narathiwat lies close to the border with Malaysia, and is the city where the royal family traditionally spent their summer holidays. In general the town is full of typical contrasts: shabby street corners, small, packed, extremely cheap restaurants and a 5-star hotel which seems to be used mainly by government officials and their family, where they serve beer "on the rocks".
Language is a true problem here, as the locals give the impression of having a (very basic) understanding of English, but in fact they do not understand much at all. At least the children have caught up with Hollywood swearing...
Being a foreigner and white clearly makes you stand out here. As long as you keep being respectful this should not worry you, though.
