Romantic sunset in Kata...
by vigi
The best time for visiting Phuket is between November and February - during these months it rains least and is not too hot. The peak tourist months are December and January - the water is calm and clear, many people are at the beaches and every evening is party time at most of the typical night life streets. If you are looking for the least crowded months for relaxed and quiet holidays then come in May, June and September. The water is wild and it might rain more often but strolling down a beach at this time of year without seeing other people has its own intimacy.
Scuba Diving @ Similan & Surin Islands: Liveaboard
by kelnsha
Liveaboard is a good opportunity to see manta rays, , frogfish, seahorse, pipefish, octopus, cuttlefish, stingrays, sea snakes, napolean wrasses, scorpionfish, moray eels, jellyfish, nudibranchs and etc...
It saves a lot of time and it is more relax than days trips because you get to do whatever you wish to (eg. eat, sleep, read, suntan, watch VCD/DVD, share diving experiences, log dives, snorkel ant etc) when you are not diving.
If you are lucky, you may even get to see whale sharks and leopard sharks...
Do check out my travelogues for more underwater photograhs... Bring your own dive gears if you have because you know that they will not fail you if you have maintained them properly. In addition, you do not need to worry if you can get the right size or not.
It will be a bonus if you own an underwater camera or videocam. Of course, remember to bring extra batteries, memory cards and chargers.
Do not forget your sunblock lotion if you do not wish to be burnt. Cheers!

PAtong beach there is a trip of bars on either side of a street that is blocked off for traffic.....music pumping, people dancing and drinking.....a great spot to have a good time and people watch.....some interesting couples (ie expats and thais) hanging about....and lots of opportunity to turn down the offeres of the friendly thia dancing boys and girls (a weird bit of an ego boost..hahaha).....party into all hours of the evening....
We only went one evening (late) and I think that is all you really need...unless this is your thing.
RA RA RA! Anything.
Great local driver with fair prices
by jolamiri
We found taxis expensive, plus there's always the issue of drivers who don't speak much English or want to take you to places so they get commission. Another forum recommended a youngish local man, Mr Mor. He's a trained vet and speaks excellent English. Clean, new, fully insured Toyota Wish seats 6 passengers. He can be hired by the hour for short trips to night markets etc, or for the half day or full day. Half day from 600 b; full day from 1200 b (petrol is becoming really expensive so difficult to be exact). When we were there he took us all over the island to temples, shopping (he knew where to go for the best prices), beaches, attractions and excellent local restaurants that really gave us the insider track! Because his English is so good, you can ask him about things you see or ask for other suggestions. We gave him a list of places we wanted to go and he worked out the most sensible route. Highly recommended by many people: polite, professional, very reliable. Contact him at pongkands@gmail.com or by phone on 01-647 2643.
