Travel Tips for Phuket

Fresh Pineapple

by Sosdaa

Had the sweetest pineapple we have ever eaten at one of the local markets. 10 bhat plus they clean it for you. Its so juicy that you feel sad looking at all the juice flowing out while they clean it

Nang Talung

by Tina-Perth

Nang Talung (pronounced Nung Taloong) is an ancient artform of shadow puppetry. It is a much loved entertainment feature at festivals. The art is dying and is now quite often only given representative value, whereby a puppet is bobbed up and down with no screen or voices. The puppets are made of leather which is frequently coloured.

Nang Talung originated in the same place as the Manorah, in Phattalung, from whence its name comes. Nang Talung is a highly skilled art. A performance usually includes 4-5 characters and the interesting thing is that only one puppeteer conducts the whole show. He manipulates the puppets which includes moving mouth parts and joints. He does the different voices and makes up the whole play which is usually a dark comedy. It's amusing to note that the farang (white guy) is usually the baddie.

The stage is a large screen with a platform at the back where the cast and crew sit. The crew make the music as needed and friends just hang out there for fun. It's quite a busy little spot.

This is really a good tip! try to find a cabdriver and let him drive you around - it´s cheap and he will show You his secrets - top beaches and very cheap resaurants (50 THB for nice food an a coke) and so on.

Patong

by Bjorgvin

If you are looking for nightlife in Phuket go for Patong beach. Patong has a lot of bars, discos etc. The center for nightspots is in Bangla Road and Soi Sunset. Everybody ought to be able to find something to his/her liking. Casual clothes all the time.
