I was looking for an affordable hotel at Patong Beach, Phuket. The peak season rates during Christmas have pushed the rates of all the hotels/resorts sky high! Resorts that were normally affordable is now beyond my budget. My criteria is 1) Affordable price (I'm on a budget) 2) Very near the beach 3) Right in the heart of Patong Beach After much searching throught the internet, I found The Royal Palm Resortel. The peak charges (Christmas period) for standard twin room is 2800THB/room/night. Expensive by Thai standard but very reasonable compared to other resorts in Patong area. Plus they have cancelled the compulsory 2000THB/per pax Christmas Gala dinner, what a relieve. The standard twin room is really small, with a bathroom with shower/tub. The room is not the nicest, I have to say. The walls are unpainted or yellowist. Staying on the 4th floor, I can hear frequent noise from the piping, which can get quite loud at times. There is no lift, so you climb! There is a small balcony, which is good for drying my wet clothes. I can also catch a glimpse of the sea from the balcony. The good thing about Royal Palm is the location. Right on the main beach road, facing the beach and the sea. Also, it is conveniently located near KFC, MacDonald's, Starbucks, Ocean Plaza, etc. Another plus point is the hotel is some distance from the sleazy bars of Bangla Road. It's surrounded by shops and restaurants. It has a small swimming pool and jacuzzi on the roof. There is also a spa on the roof, which you can get Thai massage or other spa treatments for very affordable prices. You can also have the massage in your room if you want.

We spent 10 days at this all suite hotel in Jan 2006. There was four of us 2 adults a 13yr old & a 9 yr old so the idea of having a 2 bed apartment suited us. The hotel is pefect for families of all sizes. There is a large swimming pool with waterslide ( but no lifeguard at the pool so some children were behaving dangerously & without the parents supervision), beach volleyball courts, table tennis ( but do bring your own bat & balls the hotel ones are old.) There is an unsupervised kids play room with vcd player. The hotel also has a kids club but we did not use it for our 9 year old. There is an internet room & a playstation room both of which you pay for. The staff as a general rule gave great service especially the front reception. The hotel spa was wonderful. The only down side for us was that they seemed to cater for Northern Europeans and they were there in large groups who all knew each other. So as there was only a couple of other Australians at the hotel our children didn't seem to have any one to play with and usually language is not a barrier for our kids. The other families seemed to stick together...or maybe it was just that we don't tend to lie next to the pool all day long but go out & do other stuff on holiday...we did make use of the free shuttle to surin beach on occasions. We got a terrific rate from the on-line booking site www.sawadee.com that included 4 buffett breakfasts which were a great way to start the day
This is a hotel with all apartment style rooms. In our 2 bed pool view apartment( room1308) we were on the 3rd floor no elevators so legs got a good work out. We had 2 bedrooms both with kingsized beds , robes & drawers, in room safe. lounge/dining area with couch, table & chairs. TV with espn, local thai channels, a swedish channel, star world , star movies, bbc. Kitchen with larger than hotel sized fridge, stove top for cooking, kettle, pots & plates & bowls which was great for us to make our own luches. Each suite has a verandah on the bottom floor or balconies with table , chair & towel rack. As we had a large palm tree in front of us it blocked some of our view of the pool but that also meant we had a bit more privacy on our balcony.. Best view would be the second floor rooms. Ground floor rooms were impossible to get even though I had emailed prior to our arrival...The hotel is set back from the beach area of Kamala a short 10 min walk. Its about a 15 to 20min walk into the main restaurant area of Kamala but it is a nice walk along the path they've rebuilt along the beach since the tsunami. In the street leading to the hotelare 2 small supermarket style shops the cheaper one is behind Kamala Bay Thai Massage, where there is a great beauty/hair salon. There is also a couple of restaurants and clothes stalls in the street. We used sweet n sour as they also did takeaway. We were in the Busakorn wing. We got a 2nd floor studio with pool view. IF YOU WANT POOL ACCESS, reserve a lot in advance!!!
Think about it: you get out of your room... and go directly in the ppl!!! The pool was just amazing, with statues. It was quiet too. The room was well furnished with everything you can ask for: fresh fruits everyday, beer, soft drinks, water tea and coffee (yes, all for free!!), bathrobe, iron, even slippers!!! Very good quality,friendly staff,I would recommend this place to people,as it was to me.
Lovely breakfasts,set you up for the day,Good rooms,fridge,tv,air con.Small pool,but it was fine.Only 10 minutes walk from where the action is,or 2 minutes in a tuk tuk.
