Arrive at Phuket airport at 8:50pm best place to stay for 1 night

by Wylda

Hi, I arrive at Phuket airport at 8:50pm and was wondering the best option wheather to just pay for 1 night in a cheap place close to the airport and tackle my travels the next day? Want to head down to phi phi or Koh hai for a week. or just get on with it and head south straight away. I understand the boats won't be running. Where would be the best place to stay? Is it best to pre book the boat?

8.50pm is not too late to get to wherever you want to stay and check in to a hotel. I would recommend just getting to where you want to base yourself and then work out what you want to do.

you don't say what date you are arriving but at the moment - Feb 2011 the boat to Phi Phi leaves at 8.30 in morning. Not totally necessary to book but wise in case a huge travel group is booked on it. I never book in advance, just take the chance and never have a problem, they don't like to turn any money down!

Sonkran, Thai New Years festival 12-13.4

by susu77

You just cant avoid getting wet in local New Years celebration. People throw water from cars going by, in bars in the evening, on streets.. Waterguns are popular and putting ice cubes in the water to get it as cold and nasty as possible. Driving scooter is a bit dangerous on those days but usually people slow you down before throwing a pucket full of icy water on your head. You need to be very careful with your money and camera too, everything needs to be in small plastig backs. But believe me, IT`S FUN!!
Throwing water represents the beginning of rainy season.

Khao Lak and Khao Sok

by genie47

If you have rented a vehicle, drive to Khao Lak. The real scene of the tsunami devastation. So far, the devastation is non-existent today.

I drove up there for breakfast as suggested from Khaolaklovers but ate at The Viking instead. Breakfast was still pretty hearty at THB120 for an English breakfast set with eggs done sunnyside up, baked beans, sausages, coffee and juice. As reviewed, their club sandwich is really well packed.

You can book a tour of Khao Sok National Park from there if you so desire or drive up directly to Khao Sok itself.

Not for the faint hearted if your accomodation is in Phuket itself. Khao Lak is about 1 hour's drive from JW Marriott at Mai Khao Beach itself. That is already pretty close to the Sarasin Bridge. Khao Sok is another hour's drive from Khao Lak. A total of two hours.

I suggest getting new accomodation for a night at Khao Lak itself if you desire to venture into Khao Sok. I drove back to Marriott when it was turning dark. The highways are very dark. My rented car do not have working high beams to make things worse.

Another reason why you should not drive so late at night is that petrol kiosks close mostly at 6pm. The nearest petrol kiosk to Khao Lak is just further north past the Similana resort and it closes at 8pm. Running out of gas in the dark is not good.

No, I didn't encounter any ghostly spirits of tsunami victims on my way back. Be assured. Khao Lak is a very nice place to visit.

This place boasts Asia's best resorts as voted in the 2006 Travel Awards. The Sarojin and Le Meridien Khao Lak Beach Resort and Spa. The Sarojin won Asia's best boutique hotel while Le Meridien clinched the best resort spa. This place is definitely worth the visit or stay even!

Jungceylon, Shopping Destination, Patong

by WSH80 about Jungceylon

This is the latest and one of the biggest shopping malls in Phuket. Jungceylon was a name for Phuket used back in 1511 when it was a fertile and prosperous port town embraced by the Andaman Sea. Being a one-stop mall for shopping, dining, entertainment and leisure, this is definitely one of the places in Patong you wouldn't want to miss. Almost anything! :-) It depends on your shopping list. :-)

Crazy fun if you are young enough!

by lindyz about Busy Bangla Road

Bangla Road kind of reminds me of Kings Cross in Sydney .... two totally different places, whether you are there by day or by night! We only walked down Bangla Road once at night, and that was enough for us. This place is full of bars, nightclubs etc so it is perfect for the young, or simply the young at heart. I felt I was getting a little bit too old for this kind of scene though!!!

Bangla Road is closed to traffic during the night so it turns into one busy and crazy mall!!!
