Scuba dive visibility in August.

by CEP1863

Does anyone know what the visibility is like for scuba diving in Phuket in August?

Many thanks

Re: Scuba dive visibility in August.

by Sawas.D

The Phuket liveaboard season runs from early October to mid May.
Late May to October brings monsoon winds and surface swells to the Andaman Sea, making some remote sites, such as Richelieu Rock, inaccessible and reducing visibility in general by about 30% at the open dive sites.

Travel Tips for Phuket

by Tina-Perth

I thought I'd include a picture of a cicada as I wondered what they looked like for ages before I found this one which was dying.

As the sun sets, you will start to see these large insects flying around between trees, and quite often they can startle you as they begin their song unexpectedly when they're not far from your head. They are soooo loud! The cicadas breaking into song also heralds the moment the mosquitos start to come out. It's like a mosquito alarm.

The cicada pictured here would have been about 10-12cm long, so they are way larger than the cicadas we have in Australia. Actually, the size it is in the enlarged picture is about lifesize. When Steve and I were looking for anchorage at night in small bays or at islands as we were cruising around Phuket, we thought the sound was of some kind of electric generator. If there aren't any other sounds to blend with the cicadas, their hum becomes a kind of ringing sound, like something mechanical or electronic. It doesn't go all night, but at the time we didn't know they were cicadas.

So, there you go!

Medals: Every finisher will receive a commemorative medal.

Registrations: For race only registrations please click here - if you book packages, the race registration fees will be included. Just a pair of running shoes.

You're gonna need another bag...

by trevndebs

Situated everywhere along the beach road you can find these lockup shops selling the latest designer bags.
This picture was taken just down Soi Bangla but is typical of each and every road leading off of the beach road.
This picture alone has cost a friend of ours about 2 grand as his daughters saw it and have talked their parents into trying Thailand for the first time.
The shops all seem to have a hidden storeroom behind the shop filled with every designer a girl can dream of. Designer label goods. Grab that calculator, start at about a third of their price and don't forget to smile!

Spectacular Show, not-so-spectacular story :(

by earthboundfaerie about Phuket Fantasea

You come to Fantasea for the show but really, I enjoyed the park more. When you get here, there're so many great things to see, you'll go camera-crazy here! There's also the Hanuman's Lair that will keep the little ones busy with the carnival games and all the cute stuffed animals they can win, not to mention all the fishes lit in black light that is just a sight. :) Shopping and other interesting side shows can also be found here. When it comes to the show that's held at the beautiful Palace of the Elephants, it was a great spectacle! I especially loved the acrobats hanging from the ceiling, that was very beautiful! but aside from that, I kinda slept through much of it. But only because there's not much of a story. It was a fantastic show but I just think it couldve been a lot better if they enrich the story some more. It kinda looked like they just put a story so they can have an excuse to showcase the other scenes. But nonetheless, the dances and scenes that I did get to see were amazing as far as execution.

Picture-taking at the show isn't allowed, by the way, so they will collect your video cameras and cameras at the gate but don't worry, the claiming is very very organized so you won't have to worry about getting it back after the show.

Show starts exactly at 9PM and ends 1030PM. casual is ok but it does get a bit chilly in the theater so you might want to avoid sleeveless shirts or short dresses.

Rent a scooter

by LakeFever

Since Phuket is so spread out you might want to think about renting a scooter. We rented one (for the two of us) right when we arrived. Our bungalow was up on the hill and walking back and forth to the beach would have been real anoying, getting around the island to explore would have been impossible - or expensive. During the busy season bikes are sometimes hard to track down but when you do, youre set. Cost is usually around $200 bht/day for everything. Gas is next to nothing. I kept our bike for the entire week we were in Phuket and we loved being able to go out to the restaurant, the bar, the beach, the store and back to the bungalow, etc, etc, etc.....also, great for day trips and looking around the island and beach hoping. Other transportation options incl: renting a jeep or 4X4 OR hiring a taxi/tuk tuk to take a couple people around for the entire day. Both these options run approx $30/day...an option though.
Drive safe, drive slow, stick to the side of the road, dont be alarmed by honking horns - they are meant as a heads up that a vehicle is approaching NOT (the north american honk) of - get the F out of my way A**Hole!
We had a great experince with the scooter. NOTE: driving in Patong beach is a bit nutty, ver crowded....driving along the coast simply breathtaking.
