phuket airport to patong
by ketch1973
hi guys
usually i get a non metered taxi from the airport for around 600 baht however can anyone tell me how much a metered taxi would cost approx? i understand they are to the right after you exit departures.
also how much would a minibus be? i arrive too late to get the last public bus.
would a minibus be inclined to stop at a travel agent and try to get everyone to buy accomodation and trips etc? i have had this experience in a private car once but wouldn't want it to happen in a minibus full of backpackers as i could be there forever!!
thanks in advance
mike

Last year I took a metered taxi to Kamala beach from the airport, and it was about 350 Baht + 50 Baht airport fee. If the metered taxis still exist, I'm guessing it'll be no more than 500 Baht. Haven't heard about the minibus though.

mini bus was 160 baht. Yes they did stop at the travel agent but every one had accomodation so it only took 5 minutes. The biggest wait is at the airport as they dont leave until they are full.
Travel Tips for Phuket
a beach for every kind of traveler
by roaminginspector
All of the beaches on the western side of Phuket Island are rich with natural beauty - crystal blue waters that are warm enough for anyone to enjoy swimming - and blanketed with nice, soft, very light colored sand. Swimming and diving are unavailable during some months due to the seasonal presence of strong ocean currents near the beach. Day trips to several world-class diving destinations are a popular diversion from the main island.
Patong Beach
Patong is what I would call a “city beach”, perhaps comparable with Daytona Beach, FL. A wide array of restaurants, shops, and high-energy beach activities make it perfect for young adults and singles. It’s a bit noisy, and the rather shallow beach is crowded, so perhaps its less fitting for families or couples looking for quietness and seclusion. Also - no hotels in Patong have direct, exclusive access to the beach. For them I recommend a short drive down the road to Kata or Kata Noi.
Kata Noi Beach
Kata Noi is a nicely secluded bay with a nice deep beach that is just under 1km long. Kata Noi is an excellent choice for families and couples looking for a quiet, secluded place to relax. There aren’t many options actually in Kata Noi. The Katathani resort includes pretty much all of the hotels and restaurants (one noteworthy and delicious exception is “Mom Tri’s Villa Royale”). For nightlife and beach sports you’ll need to take a cab to Patong beach.
Thai Massage
by Myndo
There are many, many places on Phuket where you can get a Thai Massage.
On the beach (Patong) you can be sure to be asked if you want one at least once a day by one of the many woman that have their places there.
An other possibility is at most hotels, they also provide this service. In special rooms, or you can also order them into your room.
Third possibility (and the one we choose) are Massage Saloons.
I am aware that the word "Massage" may have a sexual undertone, especially in some western tourists.
It actually happened to my friend once, that he was asked, whether he wanted a "hand relief" ... that was in a hotel. That was also the reason, I wanted to make sure we had a reliable and professionell place for a massage.
We asked around and found those: The Blooming Spa.
They are located at one of the roads back in Patong.
They offer the traditional Thai Massage as well as special feet and hand treatments and Massages with Herbs and Oils.
They were wonderful. If you make one of the longer treatments (they can be up to 2.45 hours long), then you go upstairs in one of the cubicles. You get clean clothes (some sort of kimono) - no, you will not be naked when they massage you.
Again: they are very good and quite cheap, too.
Eat With Your Feet in the Sand at Nai Yang Beach
by ann500
This is a beautiful beach and everyone is so friendly. No fancy restaurants (except maybe at the few bigger hotels?) but lots of small restaurants right on the beach - eat with your bare feet in the sand - it feels so good! There are also casual restaurants not right on the beach. Delicious food at all the places we tried and not expensive at all!
Set in a national park, this beach is very laid-back and uncommercial. Now more than 2 hotels, as well as private bungalows. Excellent job cleaning up the tsunami damange! See my other travel descriptions for a better look at the beach and things to do.
Teenages Heaven
by hennanights about Knock offs galore!
If you have teenage girls then they will find Phuket shopping heaven. They loaded us down with shoes, bags, jewellery, cds and even a pair of roller skates! Everything was super cheap if you know how to barter. I highly recommend you pack very little and buy it all when you get there.
Markets are open till very late and come to life again midmorning. For the business man - Beautiful Thia silk ties. My husband only brought two and wishes he had brought more. Everybody comments on them.
Queens of Drag
by stiab3 about Simon cabaret
Seeing isn't always believing!
Simon Cabarete is probably the biggest "transvestite" cabaret show around.
It's a fabulous floor show in its own right with stunning costumes, bright lights, excellent sound system and expensive sets.
But the performers are all men or "ladyboys" .of Simon Cabaret. It's near impossible to tell they're not women. Most women would love to look as good . . . and most men can't really tell the difference.
It's definitely worth a visit!
