Actually we stayed at the Marriott Phuket Beach Club, which is the vacation club sharing arm of Marriott. We were provided with a two room villa, even though it was only my wife and myself because they were trying to sell us shares. The villa was around 120 sqm in area; both bedrooms had their own toilet and bath (each with a tub), there was a receiving area, a kitchen, a dining area, and a living room. You could also walk out to your own veranda if you got tired of the airconditioning. Overall, it was terrific accomodation and I feel the rates were reasonable (US$ 17,000 for 75 years ownership for one week stay each year; around US$ 600 in annual fees). There is a swimming pool on each end of the resort very accessible to your rooms and a larger one at the center. They have in house game facilities, a gym, a day care center, and business center. There are around five restaurants, all quite expensive (expect to pay US$ 20-30 a person) although there is a deli where you can get grocery items and pastries and offers a brunch buffet at around US$15 per person. The only drawback is that it is far from the regular tourist places, as it is located on Mai Khao beach (around 50km to Patong beach or Phuket town). The beach however, is beautiful and clean stretching to more than 20km. | | | | Jw Marriott Phuket: Great out-of-the-way resort

The JW is exactly what you would expect from the Marriott chain; a western take on Thai hospitality. As a resort the JW does not miss a beat: a selection of bars, restauraunts and cafe's, beautiful rooms, three pools, impeccable service and all the frills. Of note is the wide variety of activities available at a modest charge and the pristine stretch of beach the resort occupies. Family travellers should note that the activities are broken up into three age ranges: children, teens and adults, and the list is quite long. For monsoon season, many of the activities are done rain or shine. The only downside (if you want to call it that) is location. If you are not planning on doing any self-motivated sightseeing, this will not be a problem as almost all tour operators will come and pick you up (you can arrange for a variety of tours through the hotel at a bit of a markup, but the packages and service are well worth the money). However, taxi service is expensive; the hotel service is the only game in town, with shuttles on an irregular basis and hired cars at 700 Bhat an hour. Getting a cab back from Patong Beach will run you about 500 Bhat, or more after dark. I'd highly reccomend the JW to anyone looking to arrive and relax. The short trip from the airport, along with the excellent facilities and services, make this a natural pick for a hassle-free destination. For adventurers, you may feel trapped and isolated, and as I did, begin to resent the need to tailor your schedule around a shuttle.
The pools are fantastic, as well as the array of beachside activities such as a thai massage under the palms. The restaurants, while expensive by thai standards, are truly world class. If you're doing a romantic trip, don't pass up the opportunity to have a romantic sunset seaside dinner, with menu options from the various restaurants on site. This would be a great honeymoon location, or for those looking to rekindle the honeymooner spirit. And don't forget to tip the chambermaids; every day gets you a new little suprise upon your return to the room. | | | | Jw Marriott Phuket: Beautiful Beach Resort
| | | | |
Our stay at the JW Marriott at Phuket was one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had. The price (for the quality) was very reasonable, and it felt like there were 3 hotel workers for every guest. Everyone is friendly (but not overdoing it) and can help with any special requests. We stayed for 5 nights, on each night the turndown staff created a "towel animal" for us and made sure our room was stocked with plenty of fresh flowers and fruits. Relaxing by the pool was great, although the main pool seemed geared for those with children. The beachfront was clean, and it was so empty it felt like your own private beach. The hotel offers many excursions, and we tried the Phi Phi Islands tour (great, but bring a lot of sunscreen), the sunset bicycle tour (well worth the 250 baht each) and we took advantage of their shuttle to Patong beach (a little pricey at 700 baht per person return, but cheaper than a cab). The bicycle tour is a little long for those not in shape, or used to riding mountain bikes, although we loved it! The many onsite restaurants were top notch, but a little expensive. The breakfast buffet was awesome, tons of asian and european/american dishes. The room had a 27" CRT tv with a DVD player (plays all region DVDs).
They have two onsite elephants (one was a baby about 3 years old , the other about 10 years old) and both are very friendly. They offer a Ginza cooking course, which we didn't take, but heard it was great. The pools are fabulous, and I don't think anyone will be disappointed with the quality of construction or service.
