Nice, peaceful resort in Karon
Just a 5 min walk away from Karon beach, its a lot more peaceful than Patong. There are not as many shops as Patong, some minimarts (bt 5-10mins walk) around to stock up on snacks.
It's not as convenient as staying in Patong though. Bout 1hr from the airport, 30 mins from Big C. We spent quite a bomb travelling, so its best if you plan a whoke day out to save on travel.
Doesn;t have much in terms of facilities, a nice cosy swimming pool and their own spa place. The pool's a little small for me, I went during the low season, so it was pretty empty most times. The rooms and all were very nicely furnished, with big windows and a balcony facing the pool.
Service was not bad, the people were cheerful and polite. Wouldn;t recommend booking tours thru the hotel though, I think they absorb some commission. (see tip on island safari)
The spa was good, at reasonable prices, esp with our 40% discount as part of our promo package. Do book in advance as it is quite popular.
Would recommend this if you're looking for a nice, quiet holiday. ;)

Something about mid-range pricing would be ideal but right now trying to decide on one of the beaches...from photos, both look really good...

I've just come back from Phuket. I stayed in the Hilton on Karon Beach for work, just across the road from the beach - it is lovely but probably not mid-priced though.
While I was there, the beach was shut most days because of dangerous conditions. I'm not sure whether that would be the same for Kata Beach. You may want to make sure your hotel has a nice pool as a back up as you will needs somewhere to swim (it's so hot!)
One further point. If you are planning to go into Patong for the shopping, Karon is closer than Kata. It cost on average 300 Baht from the Hilton for one way, but I did get as low as 200 Baht and heard one tourist saying never pay more than 170 (though who can be bothered haggling for that long?).

Karona Resort & Spa is nice 3 star hotel with 5 star service. They always have great packages & promotions too.
