OUR FAVORITE HOTEL WAS THE KATA BEACH RESORT ON KATA BEACH IN PHUKET.
WITH OUR PACKAGE IT WAS ABOUT 60-70 US DOLLARS PER NIGHT IN LATE OCTOBER. WE HAD A VERY GOOD DEAL. THE BEACHSIDE ROOMS HAD GREAT VIEWS OF THE POOL AND THE ANDAMAN SEA. THE POOL WAS VERY NICE, BUT BE SURE TO GET OUT THERE EARLY TO STAKE OUT YOUR POOLSIDE LOUNGE CHAIR FOR THE DAY. THE PRICES WERE REASONABLE ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAD A PACKAGE THAT INCLUDED SOME EXTRA THINGS. WE HAD THE PHUKET ISLAND PACKAGE.

In Koh Samui -- Chaweng Regent Hotel on Chaweng Beach
In Bangkok -- D'Ma Pavilion Hotel within walking distance to the shopping area
In Phuket -- Kata Beach Resort on Kata Beach
Chaweng Regent has become a lot more expensive of late than when we first went about 3 years ago... :(
but it's supposed to be a 4**** hotel.
Kata Beach was quite alright and so is D'Ma. I don't really know the rates for these places cos' we bought a free and easy package in Singapore from one of the many travel agents. The package includes airfare, 2 way transfers and hotel accomodations.
I think the rooms cost about SGD$80-100/room/night, and even then, it's quite a generous estimate. Of course rates will vary with their high and low seasons too. Both Chaweng Regent and Kata Beach Resort are hotels built on the edge of the beach, so all you have to do is walk right out of the hotel and onto the beach! It's really convenient, and these hotels are pretty nice too with good buffet breakfasts featuring continental as well as local dishes! yum!
D'Ma Pavilion in Bangkok is a rather small hotel but it's got a 7-eleven store conveniently located just across the small street where I usually buy my water supplies from, and it's within walking distance to the major shopping areas. Also, there are many small roadside hawker stalls selling all kinds of local fare! So just in case you want a light snack before bed... ;)
BEST RESORT ON PHUKET - ON THE BEACH!!!
This was our favorite hotel in our month long stay of hotels in Asia.
Incredible room, great staff, wonderful food and true 5 star quality at a fraction of the cost.
We booked this hotel through Asiarooms.com in June 2005 for only USD $47.00/night with complimentary breakfast included.
Upon arrival at the PEPTO BISMOL PINK hotel we thought: "Oh God..What have we gotten ourselves into..." Our fears were quickly eliminated when we stepped through the gorgeous oversized lobby solid wood doors into an unbelievably huge lobby. You can look out from the lobby straight through giving the massive lobby an open air feeling.
The multi levels of the hotel go up endlessly and from each balcony hang plants and living orchids.
The staff was very efficient and automatically upgraded us for no extra charge when we inquired as we noted, they were slow. This pas post tsunami and I think they were trying to get the business in. Our room consisted of a HUGE king sized bed with sild throw and complete with a Thai style sitting area next to a bay window overlooking the pool and ocean beyond.
Bathrooms were totally modern with 110V and 220V outlets making plugging in my camera gear and shaver easy as we'd had anywhere in Asia.
The breakfast buffet, considered to be the best on the island did not dissapoint. Every morning huge arrays of Western and Asian fare were available. A chef at it's own omelette station was always ready to cook up eggs to your desire.
Another huge section consisted of just fruits, yet another of cereals..yet another of juices, milk, yogurts, and still another of breads and rolls! The entire center of restaurant went on and on with food. I've only seen this much food at a buffet before and it was on a cruise ship.
Finally, coffee, tea, juice and mimosas were always flowing.
The other nice thing about this hotel is that you can book your tours directly either through the hotel lobby or right outside. We found the travel agent just outside the hotel's gates, to the right, 1 block across the street and next to the laundry mat to have the best pricing.
We arranged Phi Phi and James Bond Island/Floating Muslim village tours through her.
MAin buses run right outside the hotel gates making access to all of Phuket easy! The front desk will tell you which bus # you need to take for the different areas on the Island.
Finally, the tailor in the lobby of Kata Resort worked all night to make us 3 linen casual suits each and even got 2 fittings each to assure proper fit. He was amazing and we were extremely happy with his work.
We arrived late at night, about 7pm. We took an airport transfer bus direct to our hotel in Kata. Well, actually, not direct, because they have to drop other passengers in other hotels, and also dropped by a travel agency, trying to sell us package. It took us about 1.5 hours to arrive at Kata Beach Resort.
Top up your TAN
The Kata Beach Resort, Phuket is located directly on Kata beach and within walking distance to a variety of shops and restaurants. The large swimming pool has a jacuzzi and swim-up bar overlooking the sandy beach. All rooms are decorated in a modern Thai style with high levels of facilities and services. Ideal resort for those seeking rest and relaxation.
We just returned from staying at the Kata Beach resort on the 28th/07
of april. we were skeptical because of previous reviews. We do not know how anyone could complain about such a wonderful hotel!! The staff was friendly and we never expeirenced any attitudes when calling for service. They front desk graciously extended our checkout
time by 5 hours!! So that our children could enjoy themselves before leaving for the airport! You would never get that in the states without being charged a whole day. If you are not used to a european style breakfeast or fresh waffles then you would not enjoy the wonderful breakfeast provideded every morning. Yes!! The rooms look exaclty like the images you see on your computer. The location was perfect on Kata beach. Awesome, we plan to go back next year and stay
at the same exact hotel!!
Great Place to Stay
After reading some of the negative reviews on this hotel I wanted to share our experience.
Our room was comfortable and clean. The food was amazing (especially the variety at the breakfast buffet!!). The view was lovely and the sunsets breathtaking but right from arrival we found that this hotels best asset is its staff members. Everytime you would walk past a staff member they would greet you with a smile. They were helpful and genuine in what they were doing and really seemed to enjoy themselves doing it (even the bar staff that kept feeding us the tiger beer).
The only thing that dissapointed me about this hotel was the way other european patrons treated the staff. I was horrified at the way some people would talk to them, treating them like second class citizens.
Congratulations Kata Beach Resort, your staff made our stay very memorible.
Quite good for the price
My family (2 adults, 2 young children) stayed at the Kata Beach Resort for 12 nights in July 2007. We were lucky enough to get a fantastic deal through friends in the hotel industry for two interconnecting rooms so we couldn't complain! The rooms were very good, better than most resorts I have stayed in in Asia. The pool area was nice, but very crowded and sometimes hard to get a seat. Breakfast was also good. The views across to the beach were lovely. Drinks and food were surprisingly cheap for a 4 star resort, but just across the road from the hotel is a mini-mart to stock up on the basics. There is a western style coffee shop with internet connection also just across the road. Lots of shops around selling the usual t-shirts etc, but shopping in nearby Patong is better. Fake DVDs can be bought but its a bit of a clandestine operation. The beach is great for body surfing, but to be honest it could do with a bit of a clean up. Good, clean restaurants nearby for very cheap meals. But try Mom Tri's Boathouse restaurant a short walk away for a more up market meal - absolutely gorgeous and highly recommended. Massages, nail painting and hair plaiting at the hotel bure is cheap and good - my 5YO daughter loved getting her hair plaited and nails done for about $7 AUD. All in all a very good resort - not fantastic, but solidly good. Would I stay here if we had to pay full price? Probably not. Next time in Thailand we will probably try the Merlin Beach resort in Tri Trang. Personally I prefer a larger type resort with two or more pools and a kids club to keep the kids entertained. But if you want a more intimate resort, this is for you.
what a let down
My wife and I stayed at the Kata Beach resort From Jan 17 to the 28th of 2007. We booked this in October and were not really sure where to stay but we wanted to stay on the Beach and had read some good reviews about this resort on trip advisor. Our main purpose of the holiday was to have some R&R on the beach and do alot of swimming and snorkelling. What this resort fails to tell you is that they actually don't have any space reserved on Kata Beach (Example chairs and tables and umbrella's) for their guests in front of the hotel and that there is alot of hotels in the area that use the same beach that are not on the beach. An independant operator owns the beach furniture. If you like to get up at 5:30AM every day on your holiday to reserve a spot at the pool or beach then this is the resort for you. Everybody that does get a good spot takes their towel down at about this time and puts them on the loungers. We went down to the beach at about 10:00am after breakfast to get a spot and for the whole length of the beach it was wall to wall people with no available spots and this is a very large beach. Will definitely not stay here again. On the plus side the breakfasts and service were really good. The rooms were quite nice as well. The garden view or ocean view rooms are most preferred. We were suppose to have a garden room but ended up overlooking the street and had a view of the new hotel being built across the street with the construction workers that work until 10:00pm at night. Also there were 5 of us that took the elevator to the 3rd floor and we were stuck for about 10 minutes because we were over the weight limit of the elevator. We are not over weight people. We had to pry the door open to get out. We ended up renting scooters for the time we were here and going to the other beaches and restaurants at night in the area that were alot less crowded.
Great Place, Great Bang for the Buck
Having been to Phuket many times, I had always wanted to try Kata vs. staying in Patong itself. We arrived very early (8 AM) from SIN and checked in. They started to assign a standard room, but I quickly pointed out we had booked a deluxe, which the staff fixed immediately so was no problem. Went to our room which was on the top floor in the center area overlooking the pool and beach, WHAT A VIEW!!! The top 2 floors will give a view over the palm trees and seem very quiet. The room was large and simply great, no complaints (maybe a newer TV, but we are at a beach resort anyway). The breakfast was great all around and if early enough, you can grab a table outside with the waves in your ear. The beach in front was better than Patong by far! Plenty of chairs/umbrellas/food/drink and water sports at your beck and call. Only spent 5 days, but could have stayed 2 weeks without being cramped. Easy walking distance to all of Kata and even Karon if feeling frisky. We averaged $75 a day for the both of us here! Spend the extra few $ for the Deluxe room, well worth it. I will book this again next time without even looking.
Still enjoying a cocktail

Kata Beach Resort
What are the fitness facillities like?
Does the hotel have live music at night?
Does it cater for 12 + age group?
Re: Kata Beach Resort
Hi! We didnt actualy sleep here but we spent the night here at a function in the main buffet area. There was live music the night we were there and we were told they have this often. Not sure about the fitness facilities but the pool was great and the beach is fantastic here. Easily jog or swim. Kids would be spending most of the time in the pool or on the beach here. Great sunsets out on the back deck.
Anyone stayed at KATA BEACH RESORT?
Will travel to Phuket on Monday and will stay at Kata Beach Resort. Can anybody provie us with further details (best rooms, other helpful tips) or pictures by email?
As already asked here in the forum, how about the weather start of May?
Thanks for Your kind answer!
RE: Anyone stayed at KATA BEACH RESORT?
The best place to get information about Phuket weather - that is comprehensive daily reports, is at www.alexmalcolm.net There is also a lot of other information on the site.
RE: Anyone stayed at KATA BEACH RESORT?
Yes, I stayed there a couple months ago and there is a picture on my Virtual Tourist Thialand, Phuket Page - the rooms are nice, clean, balcony - try and get one on the 3-4th floors (great view of the bay).
Alex Malcom does have an amazing site! He lives in Phuket and updates his site regularly.
The weather should be beginning to get warm. There is a great coffee shop across the street and to the right (an internet cafe as well) amongst some other shops. Rent a motor bike and drive around - head south and it gets really pretty!
Somebody have stay in Kata Beach Resort?
I am looking the best rates for the Kata Beach Resort in Phuket and I found that Asiarooms have a very low price. I am wondering if maybe they are selling the worst rooms? Does anybody knows if all the standard rooms of Kata Beach Resort looks the same? I will really appreciate any comment about it
Re: Somebody have stay in Kata Beach Resort?
Is this a serious question?
Re: Somebody have stay in Kata Beach Resort?
Kata Beach Resort is our favorite hotel and we are constantly raving about it.
We too were unsure about it's low price when we went (USD $47.00/night) during off season which was June. We booked through Asiarooms as well.
We were AMAZED at how beautiful the rooms are, the food is amongst the best on the island and their buffet breakfast is reported to be THE best...we agreed.
We upgraded to a deluxe room (overlooking the pool and ocean) once we arrived as they had few people at this time of the year.
Good luck and enjoy your Kata stay, more pics of our room on our pages.
