Historical weather data for Phuket
by genie47
Historically, there are windows of clear weather even during the dastardly May-Oct monsoon season.
See this archive link to WindGuru.
You would agree that there are two windows of clear weather. That would be the last week of May just before Jun begins and the last week of Jun to the first week of Jul.
So go ahead, take advantage of the low rates for this time for the best resorts available.
However, please note that past data is not entirely accurate to predict future trends. Use the data at your own risk.
Khanom La
by Tina-Perth
Khanom La is a traditional Southern Thailand sweet. It comes from the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat.
This sweet is made up of fine threads and there are two uses associated with it. The first is that it is used as a sacrifice offered to ancestors at the Sat Duan Sip (Tenth Moon) Festival. It represents the threads of clothing.
The second is that it is made for a very tall, thin ghost called 'Pret' that has a tiny mouth, the size of the eye of a needle and with very huge hands, the size of palm fronds which cannot pick up the food, so it can only eat suck up such fine threads of food.
The sweet is made from rice flour, syrup and water then put into a container, traditionally a coconut shell with small holes in the bottom. It is moved back and forth over a hot pan to create the threads and then can be gathered up and shaped into various shapes.
The picture shows a lady preparing Khanom La at a festival we went to.

Benjarong Pottery, Thailand's finest.
by Tina-Perth about Siam Ceramics
Siam Ceramics on Soi Post Office in Patong is a stunning shop filled with the most beautiful traditional Thai Royal Bone China. It is of the highest quality, pure and translucent. Handpainted by gifted artisans of many years experience, each piece undergoes myriad hours of painting, being fired between colours. There are at least 3 colours on Benjarong porcelain, but more often there are 5 or 8 colours. A new style contains even more colours and is exquisite to look at close up.
Store Manager Alice is extremely patient and friendly. When we've made purchases in there, we've spent at least an hour trying out different combinations of pieces. The staff are particularly helpful and do not pressure you at all. Everything is packed superbly for you, so there's not a problem with getting your pieces home safely.
Benjarong Porcelain is actually used by the King of Thailand, and once was only available to him. There are so many different pieces to choose from, you'll find it difficult - even to select the painting style you like the most.
There are imitation products available around Phuket, but they are nowhere near as nice as the real Benjarong porcelainware. Do yourself a favour and go to Siam Ceramics before you look at buying anything else. There are some great small, affordable pieces that will make meaningful, special gifts for friends.
Please look at the websites below for some good pictures and further information, particularly the second website!
